Meta Quest 3 gains 144Hz support, improving compatible VR games while preparing the headset for more demanding future experiences.
Meta has unlocked a 144Hz display refresh rate on the Quest 3, adding a higher-refresh-rate option that can change how compatible VR games feel. The update also highlights PC VR through Virtual Desktop and Steam Link, while adding another feature that could matter as Steam Frame approaches.
In the last 24 hours, Meta unlocked the Meta Quest 3 display refresh rate to 144Hz. The update allows the headset to run at a higher refresh rate than the previous 120Hz limit. Virtual Desktop can now run at 144Hz in beta, and Steam Link has also received an important update that adds wired connectivity.
Quest 3 Gets 144Hz Support
The 144Hz option also closes a gap between the Quest 3 and the upcoming Steam Frame, which can run at 144Hz. Before the update, Quest was limited to 120Hz. Unlocking the higher refresh rate gives Meta another feature that brings the headset closer to what users expect from newer VR hardware.
Steam Frame will still have an advantage with eye tracking. Some standalone games on Quest, including Quest 2 games with Quest 3 enhancements, can look very good. Still, more demanding titles such as Forefront can place greater demands on the hardware because of draw distance and the amount of activity in front of the player.
With games like Batman, there is little point in pushing the refresh rate to 144Hz because the returns are limited. Demanding games may struggle to maintain the required performance, causing inconsistent frame rates. Native 144Hz works better with simpler-looking games. Quest Optimizer received an update that allows compatible titles such as Crash Land to take advantage of the higher refresh rate.

Future headsets with eye tracking could produce better results because dynamic foveated rendering can be combined with the higher refresh rate. Developers working on games for Steam Frame have also indicated that some titles can reach near-PC VR quality when running natively on the headset. Those results will need to be confirmed when Steam Frame becomes available.
144Hz Could Help With Motion Sickness
High refresh rates have already shown their value in PC VR. The Valve Index demonstrated how a wider FOV combined with a high refresh rate can create a more responsive VR experience. Higher refresh rates, wider FOVs, improved resolution, and eye tracking could add even more immersion to future VR headsets. The difference can also become noticeable when stepping back down to a lower refresh rate after experiencing 144Hz.
Virtual Desktop now has a beta that supports 144Hz on Quest 3. Users already running the beta may only need to make sure the beta version is enabled on the Quest. Virtual Desktop at 144Hz can noticeably improve responsiveness. Some hiccups remain because the feature is still in beta, and they can become more noticeable during longer sessions.
Games can look different at such a high refresh rate, especially when the resolution is also high. VR can feel more responsive, and higher refresh rates can contribute to a stronger sense of immersion. As headset technology improves, higher refresh rates are expected to go hand in hand with higher FOVs, better resolution, and eye tracking.
Steam Link doesn't currently support 144Hz, but a major development is the addition of wired connectivity. Wireless Steam Link can automatically adjust itself to provide the best possible results. Without an excellent network connection, this can sometimes result in a softer image. A wired connection can reduce those issues and provide a more consistent experience.
Testing at 72Hz and 90Hz produced good results, while 120Hz presented problems. One issue appeared in games such as Metro when using the TSR option. Under certain conditions, a strange wobbling effect could appear when the GPU was placed under heavier demands. The issue was especially noticeable in demanding scenes and could persist regardless of the settings used.

The service also has several practical advantages because it does not require an additional purchase and can now use a wired connection. The wired setup also reduces concerns about charging the Quest during PC VR sessions. Steam Link is expected to be one of the options used with Steam Frame, making the improvements relevant beyond the Quest 3.
Quest 3's 144Hz refresh rate creates more opportunities for older and less demanding games. Games released before 2023 may have a better chance of reaching 144Hz, depending on their performance requirements. Additional battery capacity can therefore matter during longer sessions when the headset is pushed harder. Quest Optimizer has also improved the experience in recent months.
Some games, using their available features and upscalers, can produce image quality that approaches that of PC VR. Batman, for example, can look closer to a PC VR game with these improvements. Resident Evil 4 also demonstrates the potential of 144Hz on both Quest and PC VR. When the higher refresh rate runs consistently, it can deliver a more responsive and immersive VR experience.
