Steam Frame delivers stronger hardware, while Meta Quest 3 continues to offer better availability, pricing, and standalone VR accessibility.
The VR headset market is moving to a new level with other hardware devices offering improved performance, new features, and alternative play modes. Specifications are frequently compared, along with pricing, software support, and usability, but those factors are also important.
While the Steam Frame and Meta Quest 3 are both designed to support standalone VR and PC VR, it's not necessarily about which has the better specs; it's about how they will be used. Many compare the Steam Deck and the Meta Quest based on the specs, which are often contrasted with the features they value.
Taking a Step Beyond the Specs
If the Meta Quest 3 can handle everything you'd like, a separate WiFi network and foveated streaming are not a big deal to some users. The real question is what features offer value for your particular hardware and whether you are willing to hold off on hardware upgrades to get those features.
Others have already ruled out using Meta, and others question the cost of spending $1,000 on a headset. Steam Frame is supposed to be ahead in the hardware department on paper. It supports twice the memory as the Meta Quest 3, boosts processor speed, and has a dedicated wireless dongle that can bypass the home Wi-Fi router entirely.
Meanwhile, Meta Quest 3 is priced at $600, will be available today, and has proven to be quite successful in the VR space. The Steam Frame is priced at $900 to $1,200 and is not yet released, so the issue that is left is whether the hardware benefits justify the wait and the extra money.
Meta Quest 3 debuted in late 2023 and has been the most popular standalone VR headset for almost three years now. It features a Snapdragon XR2 Gen2 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a $599 price tag. It's available now, and it's very popular amongst standalone VR users.

VR Display Specifications
The differences in display resolution are not as stark as they might seem. Steam Frame has a resolution of 2160×2160 per eye, and the Quest 3 has one panel with a resolution of 2064×2208. The aspect ratios vary slightly, but the number of pixels is almost the same, making it hard to say that this is one headset or the other, just by resolution.
The two headsets also feature pancake lenses and can hit refresh rates of up to 120hz. Steam Frame has an experimental 144hz mode, but it's not billed as a major difference in the comparison. One of the major differences in hardware is lenses. The lenses on the Steam Frame are about 55mm×50mm, and the lenses on Meta Quest 3 are closer to 42mm×45mm.
Steam Frame has a wider interpupillary distance range with the larger lenses. Valve's IPD range is 70mm, and since the headset also features a larger eye box, this should help users get by even if their IPD is not exactly right. The wider adjustment range could result in the headset being comfortable for a larger number of users, with an average IPD of approximately 62mm.

Memory and Processing Power
In comparison to the 8GB of LPDDR5X the Meta Quest 3 has, the Steam Frame has 16GB. Steam Frame has 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, a doubling of the amount found in the Quest 3, which also has 8GB of LPDDR5X memory. The extra RAM comes in handy when Proton does real-time ARM translation of x86 Windows games.
That translation layer is used during the game, and the more memory available, the better it will support it. The difference between the processors is more pronounced. Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is said to be about 1.5 to 2 times faster than the Snapdragon XR2 Gen2 that powers the Meta Quest 3. The available specs don't indicate that the CPUs' performance is particularly close.
Steam Frame also wins on the scoreboard in terms of weight. The headset core is about 185g, and the Quest 3 is approximately 515g. Steam Frame comes in at about 440g even with the battery strap attached, and is still under the weight of Meta Quest 3. That's because that weight loss may make for a more comfortable, longer gaming session.

The eye tracking hardware also provides an advantage.
Eye tracking hardware is included with the Steam Frame, but is not included with Meta Quest 3. Valve uses eye tracking to create foveated rendering, meaning the headset only renders at full resolution when you are looking at that area. The headset will have a performance boost since it will not be responsible for rendering outside of its scope of view.
Pass-through capabilities come into play in the areas of Meta Quest 3's worth. It offers full-color pass-through and depth sensor support, which are better suited for mixed reality or augmented reality experiences.
A monochrome pass-through is only available on the Steam Frame. That constraint can be one of the biggest differences between the two headsets if you're looking to use more mixed reality or AR applications. When it comes to specs, the Steam Frame is ahead in most hardware categories, but it's a clear winner in pass-through as well.
