Why YouTubers are Dominating Horror Movies

YouTubers are dominating the box office right now with their unique movies.

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally seeing indie movies dominate the box office. Not only at the box office, but they are also dominating social media and word of mouth when it comes to movies. No one is really talking about other movies right now that aren’t these few indie horror movies. Of course, the new Star Wars movie came out, but it was no match for Obsession, which somehow beat it at the box office.

Obsession had already been in theaters for a couple of weeks, and it somehow beat Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu in its first week of being in theaters. Word-of-mouth is truly coming back when it comes to movies.

People are going to movies and are giving them a shot regardless of what people are saying about them.

Obsession wasn’t really well advertised, but many people still went to see it and then told others how great it was, leading to a snowball effect that made it one of the biggest movies in the world.

We are also seeing Backrooms doing really great at the box office. Both Backrooms and Obsession are made by YouTubers. A couple of months ago, we also saw Iron Lung, which was made by Markiplier, who is a famous YouTuber. Iron Lung was financed by Markiplier himself and ended up doing great at the box office. The budget for these movies is nowhere near the average budget for most Hollywood movies. 

It’s so weird to see movies dominate the box office that aren’t necessarily made by a big studio. That means any filmmaker can make a great movie on a relatively low budget, and it could be the next big thing. It’s incredibly inspiring, especially for an independent filmmaker like myself. 

Horror movies can be easier to make and also are getting more and more popular, it feels like. Many will go see one just because it is a horror movie. A lot of horror slop has come out, but now we are eating good and finally getting really good horror movies at the box office. 

This means that people are still supporting great ideas over remakes and reboots.

Of course, not every remake and reboot is bad, but it’s always great to see something refreshing. There are so many great new and unique ideas out there, and I’m so glad to see many people embracing them.

Many people are enjoying horror now, especailly the younger generation like mine. They are finding the horror genre to be more refreshing than other generes. With horror, studios are giving younger people a chance to try something new and different. Most of the time, these end up being big hits. We are all wanting something new in the movies. It doesn't have to reinvent the wheel, but doing what Obession did was a great start.

Obession showed that we can have a simple, yet effective idea done with a very low budget. If studios are willing to give up little to nothing budget-wise and let someone fresh try something new, there is no real risk. Obession was made for less than a million dollars. To compare, the Mando Star Wars film cost $165 million dollars to make. That's insane to see.

Giving Youtubers a chance to make movies isn't a bad call either. If them making all this movie right now isn't a good indicator, then knowing that they have been making videos for years is a good sign they know their way around storytelling. Also some of them end up making short films on Youtube, like Curry Baker did. He had a couple on Youtube before he made Obession. 

The future is bright, and hopefully Hollywood will begin to notice that we want original ideas, not the same thing over and over, as those kinds of films are not making the money they once did. We are seeing those big budgeted films really fall apart and not get back what they want moneywise, if they don't spend as much and try something new, they really can't loose. If it doesn't make it's money back, it's fine as it didn't cost much at all to make. But the upside is so much higher.
