Epic has been at the heart of a growing controversy about the role of AI in game development since it revealed how its artists create concept art for Fortnite. Unreal Engine released a video showcasing a new workflow. It’s a mix of classic tools like Blender and Photoshop, along with AI-powered solutions like Nano Banana and GPT-based image production tools.
The performance was intended to highlight how artists progress from a blank canvas to a finalized idea. Epic insisted that artists start with hand-drawn characters and locations, then use AI techniques to enhance and accelerate parts of the process. The firm believes it’s the artist’s concept that drives everything from start to finish.
One concept artist designing characters created a character based on a falconer. The artist first sketched a character loosely, capturing its movements. They then added a bird to help the character stand out and worked on color blocking and fine-tweaking the lines. Later, the procedure was shifted to an internal tool incorporated into Photoshop. AI was utilized to help push the rendering a bit further while the artist kept painting and making revisions.
It was like a 3D artist handing a model to a renderer to make it appear better, Epic stated. Artists may tell the AI what to do rather than letting it create art on its own by providing it with instructions and boundaries, the business stated. But the revelation didn’t take long to generate a ton of buzz on social media.
Some viewers who saw it noted the AI-generated passes contained errors that artists had to correct manually. The AI pass added details the artist hadn’t requested, like a skull on a pouch — during the demonstration. The artist had to paint these areas out afterward.

People who enjoy the workflow said it only illustrates an iterative process and frees artists to make creative decisions rather than spending so much time on rendering. Rendering is frequently one of the most interesting and creative phases of making art, critics say, and they fear that artists are being forced into a role in which speed and output are prioritized over talent.
Another commentator noted that the approach turns artists into "human bosses" overseeing AI-generated work instead of producing it themselves. Others suggested AI might assist with production, saving time while allowing experienced artists to retain complete creative control.
The video also presented a more complex notion of the environment through a humorous suburban setting. An artist had the notion of a cat character and a mouse sign on the roof of a yarn store called Yarn Barn.
The artist laid out the background in 3D in Blender, then pulled elements in from an Unreal Engine library to create the scenario. They rigged a cat character model and placed it into the scene, and from there the artist worked on logos, signs, and other things. Once the 3D setup was done, the photo was taken into Photoshop. Paint-over work and AI-assisted rendering helped to speed up the finishing process.
"One advantage of this way of doing things is that the artist can still fix big mistakes by hand if the AI goes wrong," stated Epic. The corporation promoted the technology as a way to manufacture things faster, not as a way to replace humans who make things.
The response to Epic’s exhibition reveals a deeper fracture between the art and gaming industry. Developers increasingly consider AI as a tool to eliminate monotonous work and speed up production. Conversely, many artists fear that AI could erode conventional talent and alter the nature of artistic work. For now, Epic appears committed to a model that blends hand-drawn art, 3D processes, and AI-assisted rendering. It may be one of the most critical questions for the next generation of game creators whether players and artists accept that strategy or continue to reject it.
