This marks the first time in FIFA history that a female player has featured on a cover.

The FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition has been shown to have Chelsea FC’s Sam Kerr and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe side by side on the cover. We know new details surrounding the new and improved Career mode, and while Mbappe has featured in the last 2 EA Sports titles, including FIFA 21 and FIFA 22. Sam Kerr has not appeared on any FIFA cover and is the very first female footballer to ever be present on a cover of these famous titles.

Kerr is one of the best footballers in the world, being a member of Chelsea FC and the captain of the Australian National Team. Her inclusion on the front cover may also indicate the Women’s Super League, the highest echelon of women’s football in England. While previous entries in the series have this would be the first time this league had ever appeared in the series, and with luck, more leagues will be added as more of the titles are made over the coming years.

While this is a moment for appraisal, many are curious as to why it took so long for Women’s football (or women’s sports in general across many sports games) to be recognised and playable in their respective series. Regardless, it appears that we may be getting the Women’s Super League in this next upcoming entry.

Moreover, regarding this title, it is a landmark release in another aspect. FIFA 23 will be the last title in the franchise to be named FIFA. The next title in this sports franchise will be called EA Sports FC. More details on this next stage of the franchise are expected to be seen in the summer of 2023.
