God of War: Ragnarök has become the fastest-selling First Party PlayStation release.

God of War: Ragnarök has taken the world by storm. Santa Monica Studios’ new title has officially sold 5.1 million copies in its first week and, as such, has become the fastest-selling first-party release on the PlayStation to date. The title has unseated The Last of Us Part 2, the game that previously held this title when it was released in 2020.

This was announced on the official PlayStation Twitter account:

Congratulations to @SonySantaMonica for making God of War Ragnarök the fastest-selling first party launch game in PlayStation history! 🪓 pic.twitter.com/NPgN6YHRnQ

In addition to being the fastest-selling first-party title, it is also a franchise record for the franchise, topping the predecessor God of War (2018), which sold 3.1 million copies in its first three days. Moreover, Herman Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, also had this to say:

Thank you to all the PlayStation fans who made God of War Ragnarok the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game ever, and congratulations to everyone @SonySantaMonica on this amazing achievement #GodofWarRagnarok pic.twitter.com/M3y7Uz2GCz

This is well-deserved acclaim for a title that many are arguing is the Game of the Year; our very own review on GamesCreed stated that “God of War Ragnarök is essentially a masterpiece, and it’s no wonder this has taken the gaming world by storm”.
