With creator Cory Barlog on board, Kratos returns in an epic Norse Journey, in two seasons of God of War, and Amazon has approved a 10-episode premiere season.
On television, the gods are making a comeback. The long-awaited God of War TV series on Amazon is officially underway, and based on the sources, the adaptation is already taking shape as a significant production. Ten episodes will make up the first season, which will center on Kratos and his son, Atreus, and the Norse era plot. More thrilling still? Before the first frame is even shot, a second season has already been approved.
In contrast to many misguided video game adaptations, this one is being meticulously developed with game director Cory Barlog actively participating in the process. To “emulate the tone of the God of War game,” the showrunners promise a gritty, poignant, and myth-filled journey that adheres to the spirit of the 2018 reboot. Fans probably won’t see the finished product until 2027 or even 2028 because production isn’t anticipated to start until 2026 at the latest, with scripts still being written.
The stakes are very high. It will be tough to cast Kratos, one of the most recognizable figures in video games. Who has the voice, presence, and intensity to play the Ghost of Sparta without making it seem excessive or, worse, ridiculous has already sparked fan speculation. Playing that role ideally will be crucial to the show’s success.

There is cautious optimism, though. With Amazon making significant investments in genre series and Sony supporting the project, God of War may emulate other popular adaptations like The Last of Us. This might be the next epic saga to rule the streaming landscape if the tone, plot, and cast all work together.
Fans have one pressing question, though, since so much depends on the specifics: will Kratos be able to rule the screen in the same manner that he did the gods?
