WB confirms a reset year for its gaming division, teases a return to its biggest franchises, and fuels speculation that the sequel could tie directly into HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 has finally gotten its biggest update yet, after months of quiet and a lot of talk about what might have happened. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially set a release date for the game, which makes it look like players may be able to return to the Wizarding World in 2027 or 2028. The company didn’t say what the sequel is called, but it’s hard to miss the hint.
The update comes at a tough time for WB’s gaming business. In the past two years, the publisher has had a string of high-profile setbacks, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the cancellation of the long-awaited Wonder Woman project. They have also lost well-known companies like Monolith Productions. People in the industry publicly asked WB Games if they would drastically cut back on big-budget console development or even stop doing it altogether.
Instead, Warner Bros. is indicating a change in direction.
JB Perrette is the CEO and President of Warner Bros. Global Streaming and Games. Discovery recently said that the business had “gotten too distracted” by trying to sign too many IPs with too many studios. He said that 2025 would be a “reset year,” a time to regroup, refocus, and back away from risky live-service goals.
Then the most important thing was said: “The real fruits will start coming in 2027 and 2028 when we go back to some of our biggest franchises.” He didn’t say “Hogwarts Legacy 2” outright, but it was clear what he meant.

A trip back to the crown jewel.
The first Hogwarts Legacy wasn’t just a hit; it was a craze. Over 30 million copies were sold, making it the best-selling game of 2023. It quickly became WB Games’ crown jewel. During a time when many companies were having trouble with big hits, Hogwarts Legacy made billions of dollars and showed how strong the Harry Potter brand is.
Many times, when the talk is about going back to their “biggest franchises,” the Wizarding World is one of the first things that comes to mind. It would go with other games that people are looking forward to from Rocksteady Studios and NetherRealm Studios, but Hogwarts Legacy is the only one that has been selling well.
A release window of 2027–2028 also means something very important: time. It doesn’t look like Avalanche Software will be rushing to make a quick sequel to make up for past losses. Instead, the schedule points to a more deliberate development cycle that might let the company add more systems and make RPG mechanics more complex, resulting in a true evolution rather than a half-step follow-up. Putting that timeline next to another big Wizarding World project makes it even more interesting.
A direct link to HBO’s Harry Potter show?
The release date is almost exactly the same as the new Harry Potter TV show that is coming to HBO. The first season of the show is set to air in 2027, and new seasons will come out every year after that. It’s not likely that that overlap is an accident.
David Haddad, who used to work for WB Games and confirmed this, said that the development team and the TV division have been working together on “big picture storytelling elements.” Fans might see storylines or themes that overlap if Hogwarts Legacy 2 comes out during the first or second season of the show.
Imagine a release in 2028 that happened at the same time as Season 2 of the show. That’s usually the year when the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are turned into TV shows. Could the next book take place at the same time? Would players be able to roam Hogwarts during the time of Tom Riddle, or might they have similar experiences to Harry’s early years?
The options range from a small amount of shared history to a full-on merger. While the TV show explores the same time period, players could look into scared students, find secret hallways, or even face an encounter with the basilisk that took place over several stages.

Of course, you have to be careful. Fans are worried that the movie will just be a glorified tie-in. People still remember the rushed movie-licensed games of the past, and they have very high hopes for Hogwarts Legacy 2. If merging does happen, it needs to feel natural, like it’s part of the Wizarding World and not just a marketing tool.
The connection between the game and the HBO reboot creates a unique opportunity for cross-media collaboration. This is true whether the game stays true to the storyline set in the 19th century, jumps ahead to current Hogwarts, or explores fan-favorite eras like the Marauders.
What is the $110 billion question?
All of this is happening at the same time as a huge business deal: Paramount and Warner Bros. are reportedly agreeing to buy each other for $110 billion. Find out. Since big studios, streaming services, and gaming groups are all part of the deal, Hogwarts Legacy 2’s ownership could change before it comes out.
Massive mergers often lead to job cuts, reorganizations, and the cancellation of projects. It’s not a secret that when a company gets new management, it often changes its goals, especially when it has to pay off huge acquisition debt.
But stopping or greatly reducing Hogwarts Legacy 2 would be a strange move. The Harry Potter IP is still one of the most profitable brands in entertainment, with products in movies, TV, books, and games. The first Wizarding World game showed that high-quality single-player experiences can do well in the current market.
Still, stress over money could show up in other ways. People who follow the industry guess that there might be a push for ways to make money, like live-service features, microtransactions, or bigger DLC streams. Even though nothing is official yet, when a big company buys another, profits and return on investment are often looked at more closely.
There are still regulatory studies to be done in the US, the EU, and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority before the deal is finalized.

The situation is still uncertain until those problems are solved.
If the goal window really is 2027–2028, then the reveal might not be too far away. There are great chances to make money in major marketing beats over the next year. It makes sense that a PlayStation State of Play show would be a stage. Sony already had the exclusive marketing rights for Hogwarts Legacy and put on a very popular gaming show. A movie teaser there would immediately take over the talk.
September 1, which is known as “Back to Hogwarts Day,” is another important date on the calendar. It would be a brilliant move to release a world premiere trailer on that date, maybe along with scenes from the HBO show.
In the past, WB Games has liked longer marketing rounds.
The first Hogwarts Legacy was shown off years before it came out, which built up excitement over time. That pattern would be perfect for a show in late 2026 for a release in late 2027.
To begin with, one thing is certain: the time of doubt may be coming to an end. Warner Bros. has recommitted to its biggest titles, the release date for the sequel is becoming clearer, and it looks like the Wizarding World will be back in both games and TV shows at the same time. A marketing storm is coming, and when it does, it could change the way the next generation of readers experiences cross-media fantasy stories.
