Horizon 3's Continued Absence Could Be Tied to Sony's Bigger Plans

The next chapter of Aloy's story remains missing from major showcases as Sony appears focused on expanding the Horizon franchise beyond the main series.

One of the biggest unanswered questions following this year's showcase season is the status of Horizon 3. Summer Game Fest, State of Play, and other major gaming events delivered a variety of announcements, yet Sony's next Horizon game was nowhere to be seen. 

For many players, that absence stood out particularly because Horizon Forbidden West launched several years ago and clearly left the door open for another chapter. As a result, many fans expected at least some kind of update on Aloy's future.

The lack of a reveal has naturally led to speculation about what is happening behind the scenes. But that quiet doesn’t necessarily mean the project is in trouble or has been completely shelved. The ending of Horizon Forbidden West made it clear that Aloy's story was not over, and Guerrilla Games has previously hinted at future adventures in the series. 

One reason Horizon 3 may still be missing is that Sony's priorities appear to have shifted toward growing the Horizon franchise as a whole rather than focusing exclusively on Aloy's story.

Recently, people have discussed several projects connected to the Horizon universe, including multiplayer and cooperative experiences. Some of those projects have already been officially announced, indicating that Sony sees the franchise as more than a single-player series. 

For Sony, expanding the brand into different genres and experiences could help bolster the franchise in the long term. Instead of jumping right back into the next big game, the company might be trying to make Horizon a larger universe with several ways for players to get into it. 

Perhaps that’s why spin-offs and multiplayer projects have been getting some attention while the next chapter in Aloy’s story remains under wraps. It’s not the answer fans want to hear, but it does fit with Sony’s recent direction. Such an approach can be frustrating for players, as many of the series' biggest questions go unanswered.

The end of Forbidden West left plenty of room for future stories, and fans are excited to see what challenges Aloy will face in the next one. There’s also intrigue surrounding the new threat teased at the end of the last game and how it could affect the franchise’s future. 

Another possible reason for the silence is timing. If Horizon 3 is still several years away, Sony may see little value in announcing it too early. Showing a game too early can generate short-term hype, but it can also lead to years of incessant questions and mounting pressure from the community. 

The game’s release date could also affect when the developers eventually reveal it. 

If Horizon 3 is supposed to be one of the last big PlayStation 5 games, then revealing it in 2027 could make sense. On the other hand, if Sony views the game as an important transition title between console generations, the announcement could arrive much later. In that scenario, Horizon 3 may end up being closely associated with whatever comes after the PlayStation 5.

Of all the hyped sequels not seen in recent shows, Horizon 3 raises the most questions. Some games seem to be waiting for the right marketing moment, while others seem to be holding back until development reaches a certain stage. Horizon 3 feels different because the overall play for the franchise from Sony is a big part of it.

Despite the lack of news, there is little reason to believe that Aloy's journey has been abandoned. It’s still one of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises, and the story still has some unresolved plot points. Everything currently points toward a continuation, even if Sony is not ready to discuss it publicly. 

Based on current expectations, the earliest realistic window for a reveal seems to be 2027. We might also get an even later announcement, closer to 2028, especially if Sony wants to position the game as a big release for PlayStation’s future. Until then, Horizon 3 remains one of the most anticipated unseen projects in the industry.
