A surprise rating listing for Nintendo Switch 2 hints at a brand-new Metroid game, with rumors also pointing to a possible Super Metroid remake.
Sometimes the biggest surprises in gaming don’t come from flash presentations or perfectly planned announcements. They just show up, by accident. Well, that’s exactly what occurred this week as a mysterious entry appeared in Brazil’s official game rating system, allegedly indicating a fresh new Metroid title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The game, called Metroid “Ravenous” implies a kind of fierce hunger, a term that pairs surprisingly well with the lonely, gloomy atmosphere for which the Metroid series is known. That has many wondering if this could be another dark and frightening trip like Metroid Dread. Is Samus headed for her most disturbing assignment yet?
Could not have been timed better. Metroid Dread remains one of Nintendo’s best recent games, and plenty of players have been clamoring for an enhanced version on the Switch 2. Though the game already runs well, a visual improvement with greater resolution and smoother frame rates will make an already polished experience feel much better.
Imagine gaming on a TV, sharp 4K that explores the winding passages of the planet, or ultra-smooth action at faster frame rates. Those improvements wouldn't change what made Dread great, but they could make revisiting it feel fresh again.

The leak has also added fuel to another long-running rumor.
Nintendo may have more than one Metroid project in development. One rumor that refuses to disappear is the possibility of a full remake of Super Metroid. For many fans, that idea is just as exciting as an entirely new game.
Super Metroid remains one of the most influential action-adventure games ever made, and giving it the same modern treatment that Metroid Dread received could introduce the classic to a whole new generation while giving longtime players another reason to jump back in.
Of course, nobody knows when Metroid Ravenous might officially be revealed. Nintendo already appears to have a busy release schedule, so an early 2027 launch wouldn't be surprising. The company could unveil the game during a Nintendo Direct, or it could quietly appear as one of those unexpected announcements that instantly dominate gaming headlines.
If the leak is true then the Switch 2 might be the right place for the next iteration of 2D Metroid. Faster hardware would mean crisper images, richer environments, better lighting and smoother gameplay, all without compromising the fast-paced exploration that fans enjoy.
For now, everything remains firmly in rumor territory. Nintendo hasn't said a word, and the leaked listing has already vanished. Still, it only took one accidental appearance to get the gaming community buzzing again.
Whether Metroid Ravenous is the next big chapter for Samus, or merely the opening salvo in a much wider strategy for the franchise, one thing is clear: Metroid fans have a lot to be thrilled about right now. Now the biggest question is... how long will Nintendo keep everyone waiting?
