Nintendo’s Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade launches October 27, but physical owners still lack clear information about their upgrade options.
Minecraft remains one of the top-selling games on Nintendo platforms, continually showing on Japanese sales charts years after its original Nintendo Switch launch. It also has a dedicated fanbase; thus, its upcoming Switch 2 release is a huge improvement for many Nintendo fans.
The Switch 2 version will be released on October 27 and is available digitally for $29.99. The upgraded edition features improved graphics, the option to transfer save data from the original Switch version, and the Super Mario Mashup Pack. Switch 2 will have far greater hardware, and many fans are obviously expecting a better version of Minecraft.
The mechanics of the upgrade process have led to uncertainty, though, particularly for people who already own Minecraft digitally or physically. In most regions, those who have already purchased the digital Nintendo Switch edition will get the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Switch 2 for free until January 31, according to an announcement from Nintendo.
Physical owners were instantly worried about the language. A lot of Nintendo Switch owners, particularly families with many children, bought Minecraft on a cartridge so they could simply share one physical copy between platforms. The announcement specifically mentioned digital ownership, leaving some customers wondering if their physical copies will receive the same upgrade.
Nintendo’s announcement of a Minecraft update leaves physical owners waiting for answers.
It looks to be quite straightforward for digital owners. Because their copy is already attached to their Nintendo Account, the system may know they own the copy and allow them the privilege to access the Switch 2 version under the announced upgrade terms. The problem with physical copies is less obvious.
One guess is that the Switch 2 will get an update when the original Minecraft cartridge is inserted, allowing it to identify the cartridge and download the enhanced version. This would be comparable to Nintendo’s plan to upgrade select other physical Switch games to the Switch 2.

But there’s no solid evidence that real owners of Minecraft would get the upgrade in the same way. The lack of information has led to doubts just days before the improved version is due to be launched. That may be a big deal for families. Minecraft’s physical copies are nice because you can share a single cartridge across consoles.
Parents with more than one child may choose to purchase just one hard copy to share rather than having to buy numerous digital copies and set up multiple accounts. The easiest thing would be for Nintendo to say that if you own a physical Switch, you can use your existing cartridges on the Switch 2 to get the improved version.
Physical Minecraft owners may have to wait for Nintendo to confirm the upgrade at launch. Without that reassurance, users are left to worry if they’ll be forced to buy the Switch 2 edition on its own. We’ll find out during the launch on 27 October.
After the upgrade has gone live, physical owners can see whether their existing cartridges are immediately recognized and whether the Switch 2 version can be obtained via an update. For now, it looks that digital owners have an easier upgrade path, while physical owners are left waiting.
With Minecraft’s huge popularity and the number of families relying on physical copies, clearer information from Nintendo would doubtless be helpful. Minecraft players with physical Switch copies will probably have to wait until October 27 to know whether their cartridges will get the long-awaited Switch 2 upgrade—at least until Nintendo releases new information.
