Nintendo Direct September 2026 Date May Have Just Leaked

A new announcement and cryptic insider posts have fueled speculation that Nintendo's next major Direct could arrive during the second week of September.

Nintendo fans may not have to wait much longer for the company's next big presentation. Nintendo hasn't officially announced a September Direct, but the company’s track record makes a big presentation this month very possible. September has always been a big time for Nintendo, especially when Nintendo needs to set out its holiday lineup and start mapping out preparations for the next year.

Nintendo already faces several big questions. The company has yet to comment on a release date for its impending Ocarina of Time project, which is slated to be one of its largest holiday releases. The Duskbloods also hasn’t received a specific release date yet, and Nintendo hasn’t yet completely outlined its early 2027 lineup. A September Direct would be the ideal spot to hit all three.

Now, fans have been caught up in two different developments. 

The first is about Ubisoft's Just Dance; the second comes from Nintendo's inner community. Neither confirms a Direct on its own, but together they've built a potentially interesting timeframe. The biggest clue came from the official Just Dance social media account. Ahead of its planned reveal, the team confirmed some footage and advertising material for Just Dance: Decades of Hits had leaked online.

Some of the stolen content was work-in-progress versions of the game and might not reflect the final product, the developers pointed out. More importantly, Ubisoft has announced the full unveiling will take place on September 10. That date falls on a Thursday, a day Nintendo has often used for big announcements. It’s also in the second week of September, which is when Nintendo usually hosts its annual September Direct.

Naturally, the timing has led to suspicion that the Just Dance announcement could be tied in to Nintendo's forthcoming Direct. That's not to say that every trailer in a Nintendo presentation is a surprise, however; Third-party publishers frequently have a pretty good idea when their trailers will be appearing in Nintendo showcases, and so inadvertent or intentionally early reveals can sometimes give a hint of a future showcase.

Another interesting piece of information comes from a Nintendo Insider. The account recently asked other insiders what they’re up to in the second week of September. The only response was to suggest checking the podcast schedule instead of answering directly. That may not seem like much, but the insider has previously learned Nintendo Direct timing and has been noted for correctly forecasting presentation times.

 The report also said it knew enough about the September presentation to organize around it, but stopped short of officially committing to a specific date.

This means that September 10 is now one of the top choices among supporters. If Nintendo doesn't go with that Thursday, September 8 or 9 may potentially make sense. Current speculation suggests the key window is the second week of the month. But if the Direct happens, the bigger question is what will Nintendo actually show.

One of the safest bets is a significant upgrade for Ocarina of Time. Nintendo's next Zelda game ought to be a highlight of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Earlier reports and leaks suggest the game’s launch may be paired with unique Zelda-branded Switch 2 hardware, such as a console and Pro Controller.

"The project might consequently have a substantial gameplay demonstration in the September event. This might be Nintendo’s chance to officially debut its Zelda 40th anniversary campaign, and it could follow a similar format to its Mario anniversary celebrations.

There’s also talk that Nintendo might have additional Zelda announcements in the pipeline. Fans have asked for a Switch release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and there are still many gamers waiting for the HD editions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to come to Nintendo’s newer hardware. Another major contender is Nintendo's next 3D Mario game.

Super Mario Odyssey was released almost nine years ago in October 2017, and the wait for the next big 3D Mario game is abnormally long.

Rumors are flying about a new 3D Mario adventure for the Switch 2, and some speculate it could arrive in 2027. If that is true, September could be the perfect time for Nintendo to finally tease the project. A complete gameplay demonstration is probably too much to hope for, but Nintendo might still give us a quick teaser that shows off Mario's new look, the game’s world, or its general direction.

More ambitious reports even foresee Mario interacting with other Nintendo franchises; however, there is no strong evidence at the moment that such a crossover concept is truly planned. Ultimately, Zelda seems the safer forecast, while Mario is the more intriguing prospect. If Nintendo does commemorate Zelda's 40th anniversary at the beginning of the presentation, Nintendo might perhaps close the event with a surprise first look at its upcoming 3D Mario title.
