Team Asano knows fans are waiting for the next JRPG adventure and wants to make sure the sequel is worth the wait.
Octopath Traveler has quietly become one of Square Enix's most successful modern JRPG series. It takes the charm of classic role-playing games, gives it a beautiful HD-2D makeover, and adds enough modern ideas to make the experience feel fresh. After two mainline games, though, one question is getting louder: when is Octopath Traveler 3 happening? Square Enix may have just given fans a reason to start getting excited.
Team Asano, the development team responsible for Octopath Traveler, has acknowledged that it knows just how much players want another game. That alone is interesting, but the response went a little further. Instead of shutting down the idea of a third entry, the team explained that it understands the expectations surrounding Octopath Traveler 3 and does not want to release something that feels unfinished or underwhelming.
That is not an official confirmation that the game is being developed. There is still no announcement, release date, trailer, or confirmed platform lineup. But the choice of words certainly makes it sound like the idea of another game is being taken seriously. And perhaps that is exactly what fans want to hear.
A rushed Octopath Traveler 3 would do more harm than good. The series has built its reputation around strong storytelling, classic RPG mechanics, interesting characters, and that distinctive HD-2D visual style. Simply putting together another adventure because fans are asking for one would not necessarily be enough.
So, what could make a third game special?
That is where things get interesting. Team Asano has already shown that it is willing to experiment with the formula. The studio has worked on several HD-2D projects, including remakes of classic Square Enix RPGs. Still, Octopath Traveler gives the team something those projects cannot: a completely original world to play around with.
That creative freedom is one of the biggest reasons the franchise stands out. Instead of revisiting an established story, Team Asano can create new characters, new locations, new gameplay systems, and entirely new stories. A third game could take that opportunity even further. The first two games also showed that the Octopath formula still has plenty of life left in it.
The question is whether the next installment can find another way to surprise players without losing what made the series so appealing in the first place. For now, fans should keep their expectations in check. Octopath Traveler 3 has not been officially announced, and there is no guarantee that it will arrive anytime soon. Still, Team Asano openly recognizing the demand is a lot more encouraging than a simple "no plans at this time."
If the team really does return for another adventure, it sounds like it wants to make the wait count. And if that means getting something bigger, bolder, and more ambitious, perhaps waiting a little longer will be worth it.
