Phantom Blade Zero encourages aggressive fighting by blending attacks, parries, weapon switching, and defensive mechanics into one continuous combat system.
We’re getting a closer look at the fast-paced combat, varied arsenal, and shadowy locales, and Phantom Blade Zero is looking like one of the most exciting action games of 2026. The most obvious aspect of the preview experience was combat, which was mostly fun after spending more than hours with the game.
Phantom Blade Zero is a hybrid character action game inspired by Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry. The level design has a bit of a Souls feel to it, but the gameplay is different, focusing on sustained attack over defensive routines and attacks. Phantom Blade Zero’s fight sequences look like a grand martial arts spectacle.
The fighting system is constantly giving you a feeling of power with spectacular finishes, beautiful combinations, and well-timed parries. Players can use their sword to block bullets, perform acrobatics to fight multiple enemies at once, and smash through enemy guards to unleash deadly finishing techniques. These meetings are designed to make every conflict look desirable and seem fresh.
Another source of complexity is the variety of weapons. As players advance, they will need to alter their strategies, since each melee weapon has its own unique moves, strengths, and weaknesses. Some monsters even equip gamers with new battle skills, while optional bosses might reward players with strong weaponry.
Outside of the main plot arc there are hard bosses and secret areas for the curious to find.
Another important highlight is the boss fights, with intricate animations and varied attack patterns. One finds players up against a snake-like enemy that sends speedy aerial attacks, requiring quick reflexes, while another squares up against heavily armored lion dancers. Success is learning your enemy’s methods, locating the holes, and figuring out fresh ways to break past their defenses.

It feels like a lot of the experience is exploring. The demo also featured optional bosses, hidden locations, extra weapons, gadgets, and side missions that would be easily overlooked if you went the main route. Then there are some optional encounters that seem to have some real difficulties and rewards. So it is rewarding for those that want to experience all that the game has to offer.
One of them is a technique that allows players to move about in unexpected ways and use telekinesis to wield a sword and throw it at enemies as a ranged attack. But the method could divide the participants. If you prefer to dig into supplemental content and solve riddles, the additional world-building could be your thing. But for others, these side trips may be a diversion from the main activity.
First impressions are good, but the technical side is still a problem. Even on a hefty PC, the preview build had rare but extreme frame rate reductions. These difficulties don't destroy the experience, but they do make me question how well the ambitious action game would run on the PlayStation 5.
The big concern before launch is how it will perform technically.
S-Game is supposedly going to throw a lot of money at optimization in the weeks before release. But the final console performance is still an unknown, especially with the preview only being available on PC. An innovative fighting system merging offense and defense into a seamless experience.
One of the more unusual design choices in the game is the attack-defense combo. Phantom Blade Zero is all about keeping up the pressure and reacting to threats as they arrive, not waiting for an enemy’s attack to finish to hit back. The fighting system features light and heavy attacks, combinations, special counters, skills, buffs, various postures, and equipment loadouts.
It is one of the elements that encourages players to switch weapons often instead of sticking with one weapon during an engagement, allowing you to move between two key weapons in combat. Parrying is really crucial. A well-timed parry will do you more good than a poorly timed defense will cost you a precious resource.

This discourages gamers from just holding the defensive button and encourages the player to study assault patterns of foes. The game also tries to be approachable, enabling a lesser difficulty level for players to enjoy the wonderful action without having to understand every mechanic.
Some of its more complicated elements take a while to get to grips with, especially if you want to fine-tune weapon switching and more sophisticated battle skills. Overall Phantom Blade Zero has been a promising glimpse with magnificent action, tough bosses, and essential exploration. The combat system alone would set it apart from other action games, but it’s all about optimization to make sure it launches smoothly.
