Sony Releases PS5 Update 14.0 Alongside New Pulse Wireless Headsets

PS5 users can now discover popular games, identify speakers in voice chat, and explore multiplayer trends more easily.

Sony has officially released PS5 system software version 14.0, which includes a handful of new features and previously known improvements. While the test version of the update didn't seem to introduce many big features, the public release has various enhancements that enable users to find games and communicate during audio chats.

Among the new features is the improved PSSR 2.0, which is now automatically activated through the corresponding settings. The previously mentioned Bluetooth restriction is also part of the upgrade. But the most notable changes are three new capabilities for voice communication and game discovery.

The first new feature is the ability to see who’s talking in a native PlayStation voice chat. In the Control Centre, players can see the voice chat card, pick extra options, and activate the speaker indicator. Users can also select how to display the names of persons speaking on the screen.

It works quite similar to the speaker signals you’ll see on Discord, except now it’s baked into the PS5’s native voice chat. This should make it simpler to tell who’s talking when many people are talking about the same topic, especially during multiplayer sessions.

The second addition is Trending Now, found on the Welcome Hub. Sony says Trending Now displays ten multiplayer games or modes that are trending up at the moment. The segment is meant to highlight new releases and games with major content updates. No more need to ask friends or utilize external websites to find out which multiplayer groups are now gaming.

This information is now available directly on the PS5 interface. Trending Now may also tempt people to explore games they might otherwise ignore. For example, a multiplayer game that has a major update might be listed, getting additional eyes on it from gamers looking at their PS5 Welcome Hub.

Perhaps the most noticeable addition to the update is the third feature, Top 10. The Top 10 is a list of the ten most popular games from the last week in a user’s country or region. The new Top 10 area shows games that are very popular in local PlayStation communities each week. The idea is to give users a quick snapshot of what games currently are popular.

Trending Now only includes popular multiplayer games and modes, whereas Top 10 provides a more complete picture of the most popular games in that region. The feature may become more evident when huge versions are present. In the weeks after release, users will be able to see how freshly released games compare to other popular games.

As the launch is over, we’ll probably see a lot of buzz for big games like Grand Theft Auto VI as people start looking at the rankings. Combined, these enhancements make update 14.0 more robust than the beta suggested. Sony has kept making modest upgrades to the PS5 interface.

But the new discovery capabilities provide players more information about what other members of the PlayStation community are playing. Accompanying the update, Sony has unveiled a couple of refreshed wireless headsets for the PlayStation 5 and other compatible devices. The latest models are named the Pulse Wireless Headset and the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset.

Sony says the new headsets have better sound, comfort, and noise rejection. Both models use unique, studio-inspired planar magnetic speakers that better reproduce critical audio details, such as softer noises like enemy footsteps. The larger planar drivers are also said to deliver richer and deeper bass, without sacrificing the purity of Sony’s current Pulse Elite headset. 

Another big plus is the AI-enhanced noise reduction using the built-in microphones. The technology is meant to remove background noise during voice communication, which could make conversations more clear when users are gaming in a place with ambient noise.

This will give the new models a more detailed audio profile while keeping the functionality expected of PlayStation’s wireless headphone lineup. Both variants are also available in a redesigned form factor, focusing on comfort and durability. The ear cups swivel so you can lay the headsets flat when you carry them around. 

It’s designed to make the headsets more portable while also removing some of the bulk of regular gaming headsets. Pulse Edge also features active noise cancellation, a detachable microphone, and other premium audio features. The Pulse Edge Wireless Headset has more functions than the basic Pulse Wireless Headset.

The Edge model will also include a carrying case. The headset is designed to provide a more enhanced audio experience while its updated shape offers comfort during extended gaming sessions, Sony says. However, their release timetables differed considerably. Sony plans to launch the conventional Pulse Wireless Headset in late 2026, with the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset coming later in early 2027.

Pricing, release dates, and pre-order information will be announced at a later date. This staggered launch implies that for those wanting the higher-end Edge model, they’d have a lengthier wait to get it. Sony has not released pricing information for either headset, so we won’t know how much either headset will cost until we do.

Sony has made some software and hardware tweaks to its existing console environment, with the PS5 version 14.0 now available and two new Pulse headsets coming soon. The update’s new Trending Now and Top 10 features, plus a new speaker indicator, provide PS5 users with additional ways to find social and gaming content, while the future Pulse collection focuses on audio quality, communication, and comfort.
