Excitement for 2029 launch raises bigger questions about frame rates, Unreal Engine 5, and the longevity of Sony’s current console.

There have been a lot of rumors and industry talk about how the PlayStation 6 might come out in 2029, which has got gamers excited. But not everyone is celebrating. The main point of the case is simple: why rush into the next big step when many gamers are still arguing about whether the step from PS4 to PS5 was big enough?

Some critics have said for a long time that the visual gap between generations hasn’t changed things as much as other jumps have. That picture might not show the whole story, though.

In fact, one idea that is getting support is for doubters to get their PS4s out of storage and play some late-generation games again. Screenshots and images of two things next to each other don’t always show the whole experience.

On paper, visual fidelity may look about the same, but speed, especially frame rate, is where the gap between generations is clear.

Just look at God of War Ragnarök. The game runs at 30 frames per second on PS4. Players can get 60 FPS on PS5, and sometimes they can even get 120 FPS. There is a big difference between them. It changes how fast, smooth, and immersive it is in a big way. The PS5 doesn’t just speed things up; it often keeps the beauty of the graphics while it does so.

When we look back, the PS4 era rarely aimed for 60 FPS all the time.

Stability was never a given, even when it was. The PS4 Pro advertised 4K resolution at 30 FPS, more than it advertised its high frame rate ability. During that age, many players just didn’t expect games to run at 60 frames per second.

PS4 games from the late generations, like Ghost of Tsushima, did very well, but they weren’t the norm. Third-party games like Control often had trouble keeping even 30 FPS all the time, especially near the end of the age. Frame rate problems were common, and drops in speed could have a big effect on the game.

On the other hand, the PS5 hasn’t had many of these problems so far. But some people think the real test is still to come. The console may start to show its limits as software tools get better and visual ambitions rise, especially in the next two years.

It is believed that first-party studios will push the hardware even further than before.

People are already talking about how Naughty Dog’s future projects could be used as graphical showcases. It’s possible that games like Intergalactic could try for cutting-edge graphics that might need 30 FPS caps to keep the quality, which is a reminder that performance trade-offs are always possible.

Wolverine, on the other hand, is expected to be one of the most impressive technology showstoppers for the PS5. Major exclusives could start to push the machine closer to its performance ceiling with lighting systems that get more complicated, environments that get more crowded, and cinematic presentations.

Ideas can change quickly. Many people didn’t think a new generation was needed at all when the PS5 was just a story. However, once performance gaps were made clear, it quickly became one of the most talked-about platforms in video game history.

Now, some people say that getting too excited about the PS6 seems like a waste of time, especially since Sony plans to support the PS5 well into the next generation. Sony is likely to plan for a longer cross-generation approach this time, unlike the PS4-to-PS5 transition, which was slowed down by global lockdowns and supply chain shortages.

That means that big games could keep coming out for the PS5 for years after the PS6 comes out.

Early adopters will always be able to upgrade for the best speed, but most people may not feel the need to do so right away. The worry that Sony will suddenly stop making the PS5 doesn’t seem to be based on what they’re saying now. According to what the company has said, the PS5 version is meant to last a long time.

Some experts aren’t surprised if the PS5 comes out in 2027 instead of 2029, which is interesting.

They also agree that the PS5 hasn’t reached its full potential yet. Concerns do come up with games that use Unreal Engine 5. A number of well-known games made with Epic’s newest engine have had trouble running smoothly on PS5.

Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater are two recent cases that have been said to have had problems, even in their 30 FPS modes. Performance modes are meant to get better frame rates, but they often get unstable, staying around 30 FPS with unlocked frame rates that are below VRR thresholds. In those situations, the “performance” choice might not seem to help or even work against you.

This is a big change for a system that made 60 FPS games seem normal at first.

It used to look like 30 FPS would be easy for the PS5. Now, it’s getting harder for some Unreal Engine 5 projects to regularly clear that bar.

But that doesn’t mean the PS5 is useless; in fact, it’s not even close. But it does show that developers are getting closer and closer to the hardware’s boundaries. As the level of detail keeps getting better, it’s less about whether or not the PS6 is needed and more about when the tipping point will come.

For now, though, the main point is easy to understand: PS5 users shouldn’t feel rushed to upgrade, even if Sony announces a PlayStation 6 soon. From what we know about the past, a long overlap between generations is possible. It may still feel a few good years away from being truly old, at least, unless performance needs drastically outpace expectations.
