Ron Gilbert stated that “The Joy of Sharing has been driven from me.”
The developer of the newest entry of the famous Monkey Island series has faced some harsh criticism facing the changes made to the game’s art style from the original Monkey Island titles and the sequel that was announced back in April of this year.
Following the barrage of vitriol from certain fans, it seems Ron Gilbert has had enough and announced on his blog that he will no longer be sharing anything about the game whatsoever. Gilbert stated that he was “Shutting down comments. People are just being mean, and I’m having to delete personal attack comments.” He further stated that “It’s an amazing game and everyone on the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it, but don’t ruin it for everyone else. I won’t be posting anymore about the game. The joy of sharing has been driven from me.”
There has been a major outcry from developers and developers alike following this statement. The voice of Guybrush Threepwood himself, Dominic Armato, shared this on Twitter:
He further stated that this reaction was based on the comments that Ron Gilbert “Didn’t moderate” and further went on to say that this was “Not a one-sided phenomenon.”
He was not alone in expressing his disappointment with fans. Neil Druckmann, most notably known as the writer and director of The Last of Us Part 1 & 2, expressed his dismay at the fanbase’s reaction and expressed his support for Ron Gilbert and his team. He stated this on Twitter:
His statement refers to the fact that after (and prior to the release of The Last of Us Part 2, Neil himself also faced intense backlash with vitriolic language of all manner being flung at him. Despite all of this, the next entry in the Monkey Island series is scheduled for release in 2022, and I, for one, cannot wait for the game’s release.
