Sony reportedly explored an animated Horizon Zero Dawn series, showing the company is still betting big on one of PlayStation's biggest franchises.
Horizon just keeps getting bigger. Sony has reportedly explored creating an animated series based on Horizon Zero Dawn, adding yet another project to the growing list of adaptations built around the popular PlayStation franchise. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the report suggests Sony still sees plenty of potential in Aloy's world beyond video games.
The reported project was said to be in development at Sony Animation, even after plans for a Horizon movie began making headlines. But there’s still no definite news if the animated series is moving forward or if it has any connection to the previously announced live-action remake. Its future is unknown, for now. But the article tells a story: Sony is not backing off Horizon.
Since the introduction of Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, the series has become one of PlayStation’s flagship brands. It was a unique experience that combined sci-fi science, enormous robotic monsters, and breathtaking open world environments. Horizon Forbidden West takes the story and universe to the next level. It’s simple to see why Sony wants to share that universe with audiences in multiple ways.
An animated series is actually a logical match. Horizon’s bright settings, fast-paced action and giant machine clashes would transition well to animation. It would also allow designers more latitude to reproduce the game’s larger than life universe without many of the restrictions that come with live-action projects.

But the greater concern here is: is Sony trying to accomplish too much with Horizon?
Over the past few years, the franchise has expanded well beyond its main games. Between spin-offs, rumored film projects, television plans, and now an animated series reportedly being explored, Horizon has become one of Sony's biggest entertainment brands. That can be exciting for longtime fans, but it also raises concerns about whether constant expansion could eventually lead to franchise fatigue.
Some players are all for it. They want more stories from Horizon's fascinating world and believe animation could explore parts of the universe the games never had time to cover. Others would rather see Sony focus on delivering the next major game before investing heavily in additional adaptations.
After all, Horizon Forbidden West left plenty of unanswered questions, and many fans are far more interested in seeing Aloy's story continue. The expected third game remains one of the most anticipated PlayStation projects, with players eager to find out how the trilogy will wrap up.
That doesn't mean an anime couldn't work. In fact, it might end up being one of the best ways to expand the series if it's handled with care. Animation could potentially showcase the size, style and personality of Horizon in ways that seem genuine to the games, but also introduce the franchise to an entirely new audience. But for now, nothing official.
The reported anime is still surrounded by uncertainty, and Sony has yet to reveal whether the project is still active or quietly shelved. One thing does seem clear, however. Sony continues to see Horizon as one of its biggest long-term franchises, and the company appears willing to explore every possible way to grow it. The real question now is whether fans are ready for even more Horizon—or if they'd rather Sony put all its attention into delivering Aloy's next adventure first.
