The NPD’s June 2021 report shows that total industry spending increased by 5% to $4.5 billion, which is 5% year over year. Nintendo Switch topped June in unit sales and was the best-selling platform in both unit and dollar sales for the first half of 2021. In terms of dollar sales, the Xbox Series X/S was the best-selling platform, and Xbox console sales hit a new high, surpassing the previous peak set in June 2011.
In April 2016, Ratchet & Clank was launched. Now more than tripling sales of the previous record, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart became June’s best-selling game, with the greatest launch month dollar sales of any product in series history in terms of software. “June video game hardware dollar sales increased 112 percent to $401 million from June 2020,” according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “This is the biggest total for June since $617 million in 2008.” Up 14% from June 2020, accessory sales in the first half of the year were $1.2 billion. Extras going down 1% year more than a year to $207 million. The DualSense Wireless Controller White was the best-selling item in the first half.
