The Walking Dead is Making a Comeback With a Remastered Collection and a New Game

A resurfaced announcement from 5th Planet Games suggests Skybound is preparing more than a remaster of Telltale’s classic series.

The Walking Dead could be preparing for a much bigger return than anyone initially expected. Recent leaks have reportedly brought attention to a potential remastered collection of Telltale's The Walking Dead games, but a separate announcement from 5th Planet Games suggests there could also be an entirely new game in development. 

Skybound is reportedly developing the project, which will connect to Robert Kirkman's original comic universe. While none of this has been officially revealed as a new Telltale-style game, the timing of the information has made the possibility considerably more intriguing.

The idea of a remastered collection by itself would already be notable. 

Telltale's The Walking Dead series remains one of the studio's most recognized narrative adventure franchises, with its first season introducing players to Clementine and becoming a major part of the company's legacy. 

The last main game in the series arrived years ago, meaning there is now an entire group of players who have never experienced the original story. A modern collection would give those players an easy way to catch up with the series while bringing the older games to newer hardware.

What makes the situation more compelling is that the collection could potentially serve the same purpose as the recently discussed return of The Wolf Among Us. A remastered version can reintroduce an older series to players who missed it the first time around, while also giving existing fans a reason to revisit it.

The remaster of The Wolf Among Us could help draw attention back to the franchise ahead of its long-awaited sequel. The same strategy could make sense for The Walking Dead if Skybound is preparing another major game.

This tidbit of information comes from 5th Planet Games, who previously announced their involvement with a new video game set in the Walking Dead universe. The announcement is from November of 2024, so the project appears to have been around for a while without much fanfare. 

The announcement said that 5th Planet Games is co-financing the new game, which Skybound is developing. The team is also expected to collaborate closely with Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead comics.

That announcement does not specify whether the new project is connected to a remastered collection of Telltale's games. 

The connection between the two is currently an assumption based on the timing of the reports and the apparent existence of both projects. The wording is still important, though, because 5th Planet describes its involvement as a "new video game" set in The Walking Dead universe. 

There is still plenty of room for uncertainty. A remastered collection would technically be a new release for modern platforms, but it would not normally be described as an entirely new game in the franchise. The original announcement also did not mention Clementine, Telltale, or any specific characters from previous games.

Until Skybound or 5th Planet Games provides more information, the safest conclusion is that a new Walking Dead game exists in some form, but its exact relationship to the rumored remaster remains unclear.

The possibility of Clementine returning is another major question surrounding the project. Clementine starred in Telltale’s Walking Dead story, and if a new game is in development, many fans would naturally want her to return.

Either possibility would give the remaster more significance than simply updating old games. If all four games were brought together, players would have an easier way to experience the full storyline without having to track down separate releases. That would also create a natural starting point for anyone who eventually wants to play whatever new game Skybound is preparing.

At the moment, though, it is important not to treat the rumored collection and the new game as one confirmed package.
