A Narrative adventure most unexpected in Pentiment comes later this year.
The Xbox and Bethesda Showcase revealed much about many highly anticipated titles. We finally received that much-salivated-over gameplay of Starfield, one of the most anticipated games, releasing sometime next year. In addition to this, we also finally caught wind of the other game being developed over at Obsidian Entertainment.
The Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Avowed were all titles that were revealed to be in development. So it’s surprising to see that, in fact, Obsidian Entertainment announced another title that is coming in November 2022. Pentiment. Unlike the various RPGs that Obsidian has curated over the years, Pentiment is one of the more unique-looking titles coming out this year.
Check out the trailer for Pentiment below:
The game has one of the most unique art styles I have ever seen, evoking images of woodcut prints and illuminated manuscripts. The game is set in 16th-century Bavaria, with much of the history itself being a basis for the game. It serves as a sort of detective story where you play as artist Andreas Maler.
The game is very interesting, and many have suspected that perhaps it would play somewhat similarly to Disco Elysium. However, game director Josh Sawyer (Director of Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 as well as Fallout: New Vegas) stated in a tweet that it isn’t inherently true:
Sawyer ensures players that the game is not really like Disco Elysium at all and plays more similarly to titles like Oxenfree, Night in the Woods, and Mutazione. Sawyer also mentions “light RPG elements and a branching narrative,” which is a nice confirmation for the title. We saw in the trailer options for selecting what Andreas did during his ‘Wanderjahre’ (Which means a year travelling abroad), and players have the option of Basel, Flanders, and Italy. All important areas of 16th-century Europe.
Decisions like this could be minuscule or massive, depending on the context of the story, and fans of branching narratives should be excited for another title with multiple different endings to get through.
Pentiment is coming to Xbox Game Pass day one as well as Steam in November 2022.
