As a massive Weeknd fan, I believe his film, Hurry Up Tomorrow, will be forgotten just like The Idol was.
The Weeknd has had two strikes at his attempt to transition to film and television. Hurry Up Tomorrow did well at the box office with the budget it had, but everyone seems to hate it. It’s déjà vu, just like how everyone hated the TV show he was in, The Idol. It hurts to see, as I am a massive Weeknd fan when it comes to his music. I own all of his albums on CD and will continue to listen to his music as long as he puts it out. I believe that he hasn’t made a bad album yet, and he continues to be the best pop artist of this generation.
But his new film, Hurry Up Tomorrow, will be forgotten in the coming years. The film itself is getting a lot of hate due to The Weeknd’s bad acting in it, which was prevalent in The Idol show as well. I was rooting for The Weeknd, as I’m such a big fan, but I have to agree that he’s not a great actor. If it weren’t for Lily-Rose Depp in The Idol, the show would’ve fallen completely on its face, but where she did such a good job, it was at least somewhat redeemable.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is kind of the same situation. Jenna Ortega does a great job with her limited screen time. The best part of the movie is seeing her and The Weeknd interact with little to no dialogue as they go on a date together. The cinematography and music were already great in this film, but at that point in the movie, we got to see how good it could’ve been with better writing. The Idol also had great music and cinematography, but the acting and writing were horrible, just like Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Hurry Up Tomorrow itself could’ve been an extended music video or a story told through music videos of his new album, which is under the same name. Let me explain what I mean: the album could’ve had a music video for almost every song, and could’ve told the same story with the music videos themselves.
So you would’ve had scenes with only music playing, no dialogue. Could’ve also put this in theaters as well as a limited release. I understand it would not have made as much money as saying it’s a movie, but at the same time, now you’re getting so much backlash because of everyone hating the movie.
The movie is worth watching if you’re a fan of his music in general, as it has a lot of his music and performances in it, and is shot very well. If you can, watch it while you’re doing something else or talking with someone.
I know The Weeknd has plans to make more films. Hurry Up Tomorrow is supposedly his last album as The Weeknd. But it’s hard to say if his next film will do well, as everyone has it out for him after this movie. I am a diehard fan of his music, so I guess I’ll go see him if he continues to act in film, but it’s going to be a hard watch.
