Armor is one of those things that's easy to ignore when you're mostly looking for better weapons. Once you start putting a build together, though, the bonuses on your armor can matter quite a bit.
Pick Armor That Fits Your Playstyle
Think about how you actually play the game. If you're constantly getting up close to enemies, you'll probably want armor that makes those fights easier to survive.
If you usually stay back and attack from a distance, look for bonuses that suit that instead. There's not much reason to use an effect that sounds good if you're barely getting anything out of it.
Build Around Your Weapon
Your armor doesn't need to do all the same things as your weapon, but the two should make sense together. For example, if your weapon already hits hard, you might get more out of armor that helps you stay alive.
If you're using something weaker but faster, bonuses that work with frequent attacks can be more useful. You can also use your armor to fix a weakness. If your weapon struggles against groups, having other parts of your build handle them can save you a lot of trouble.
Don't Forget Defense
It's pretty easy to get carried away with damage bonuses. Killing things quickly is great, but it doesn't help much when you're getting knocked out before the fight is over.
