Here's what to do with rotten food in Nivalis Nights.
Food in Nivalis Nights rots over time, and rotten food piles up in your fridge and cupboard. You can sell it for 0, or you can put it in a composter in your greenhouse and make your crops grow faster. This guide covers how to find it, where to buy the composter, and what it does. The key names here are for a keyboard.
Find Your Rotten Food
Open your storage, such as the fridge or cupboard, and type "rot" in the search bar. Every piece of rotten food in that storage shows up. Check each place where you keep food, since each one holds its own.

Sell Rotten Food to a Vendor
The easiest option is to sell it. Go to any vendor in Nivalis Nights, type "rot" in the search, and sell a piece. It pays 0, so you gain no money. It only clears space in your bag.
Buy a Composter in Nivalis Nights
A Composter does more for you. Open Fast Travel. The list shows Lowtown, where your starting apartment is, and the Docks. Pick the Docks. The greenhouses are there, and you start with one of them. Right next to them you find a Seed Peddler and a shop called Sonic Flow.

Go into Sonic Flow and talk to the Hardware Vendor. Type "com" in the search to find the Composter. It isn't cheap. The price changes by district, so another district may sell it for less.
Place the Composter and Fill It
Go back to the greenhouse and place the Composter. Put your rotten food in it. There is no lever or button. The food only has to sit inside.

What the Composter Does
Press I to inspect the machine, and look at the Speed tab. A fertilizer bonus shows there, such as 15%. A 15% bonus makes your crops grow 15% faster. A faster crop means you can harvest more often, and later in the game you may harvest more than once in a day.
Known Issue With the Composter
You may find that the stack of rotten food is back in your inventory after you fast travel away from the greenhouse. Several Nivalis Nights players reportedly see this, and it may be a bug. One player says the growth bonus still works. Check your inventory when you return, and if the stack is back, put it into the Composter again.

What to Do Next
Search your storage for rotten food, then buy a Composter at Sonic Flow. Place it in your greenhouse and fill it. Replant your crops and check the Speed tab again. After you travel, check whether the food returned to your inventory.
To use rotten food in Nivalis Nights, you buy a Composter from the Hardware Vendor, place it in your greenhouse, and fill it so your crops grow faster.
