Here's how to see at night in Rust.
You don't have to hide in a base until sunrise to get around Rust at night - there are a few tools that can help you see. Each comes with its own tradeoff between visibility and safety, so picking the right one depends heavily on the situation and how much risk is worth taking.
Weapon Flashlight
Attaching a Weapon Flashlight and pressing F lights up a wide area ahead while keeping a weapon ready to fire at the same time. The tradeoff is significant though - the beam can be seen by other players from a long distance, often before they're even spotted in return.

It can also be used at close range to briefly blind an opponent, which adds a small offensive use on top of its main purpose.
This makes it risky to use out in the open, but far more reasonable inside enclosed monuments like Military Tunnels or the Oil Rig, where the light doesn't carry as far and enemies are more likely to be close regardless.
Torch and Flashlight
The handheld Torch and Flashlight work similarly to the weapon-mounted version, just slightly dimmer overall. Both still give away a position from a distance, and since they occupy a hand slot, nothing else can be held or used while either one stays active.
In Rust, the handheld flashlight is technically classified as a melee weapon, though its real purpose is almost always lighting up dark paths rather than fighting with it directly.
Miner's Hat
The Miner's Hat solves the hand-occupation issue since it's worn rather than held, leaving both hands free to use tools or weapons while it's lit. It runs on low grade fuel rather than draining a battery, and still keeps working even after death, so the light stays on around the body until the fuel runs out.
It still emits a visible beam that gives away a position just like the other light sources, so the safety tradeoff remains the same regardless of how it's equipped.

Night Vision Goggles
Night Vision Goggles are the strongest option for moving around undetected in Rust at night, though they come at a real cost. Crafting them requires unlocking the schematic at a Level 2 Workbench, along with High Quality Metal and Tech Trash to build.
Battery life runs out after 900 seconds of use and needs recharging at a workbench afterward, with a small amount of maximum charge lost every time they're refilled.
One important thing worth correcting here - despite feeling like a stealthy option, the goggles actually give off a visible green glow from the eyepieces at night, which can make the wearer easier to spot up close rather than harder.
They also cause a temporary blinding effect if a bright light gets shone directly at someone wearing them, and wearing a helmet at the same time isn't possible, though a bandana can still be worn underneath for a small bit of extra protection.
The real advantage isn't invisibility, it's the improved vision itself, letting movement and positioning happen more confidently in the dark. Just keep in mind that any other player equipped with the same goggles has that same advantage over anyone without them.

Going Without Light
Running without any light source at all is often the safer overall approach if none of the above are readily available. Crouching in open, treeless areas makes it easier to spot the silhouette of another player against the night sky, giving a clear shot without ever needing to give away a position first.
This approach works especially well outside of monuments, where there's more open ground to take advantage of compared to the tighter indoor spaces where a flashlight becomes more necessary.
