Terraria: How to Set Up an NPC Housing Area Guide

NPCs in Terraria are an essential part of the game, offering a range of services, items, and advantages that will help you advance. You want your NPCs to have a safe place to live. Good housing makes it easier to find them when you need their services. Suitable residences readily established early on also help to organize your base.

Choose a Location

Choose a suitable spot for your NPCs' housing area to begin with. To make travel easier, just pick a flat spot near your main base of operations. This also gives you plenty of room for any future NPCs that might move in. Be sure there is enough space to build several rooms.

Build Individual Rooms

Create different rooms for your NPCs using blocks, walls and other building materials. Each room should have sufficient space and basic furniture needed to be deemed suitable accommodation. If you can build many rooms at once, you could save a lot of time in the future.

Add the Required Furniture

Each NPC room must have a light source, a flat surface item (table or work bench) and a comfort item (chair). Ensure that these items are placed in the room to make sure that the housing is recognized as valid.

When you get a good number of legitimate rooms, fill them with NPCs and make your housing area however you please. You can keep NPCs together or spread out over various parts of your world, as you wish for convenience.
