Here's a quick guide on how to find and use Pylons in Terraria.
Pylons are useful items in Terraria that let you travel fast between different parts of your world. Once you have a few in the right places getting around can be a whole lot easier especially when your base is a long way from other areas.
Finding a Pylon
Pylons are sold by NPCs when their happiness and the nearby living conditions are met for that particular NPC. Different NPCs sell different Pylons so moving them around can help you unlock the ones you need.
Pick a Location
Before you buy, think about where you want each Pylon. Pylons can be placed in different biomes, like Forest, Desert, Jungle, Snow or Ocean. Try to put them in places you think you will visit often.

Keep the NPCs Close
Pylons only work if there is proper NPC housing nearby. Make sure the NPCs who helped make the Pylon available are close and happy with their surroundings. If you take everyone away, the Pylon might not work anymore.
Place the Pylon
Once you have a Pylon, put it somewhere handy in the area. You can build a small house or settlement around it and have the needed NPCs nearby. When you come back to the area, it’s easier to use the Pylon if you keep everything together.
Build a Pylon Network
Try to have Pylons set up in a variety of different areas of your world. Having one near your main base and the others in useful biomes gives you more places to travel to and from. You don’t have to set them all up at the same time, so add new ones as you go.

Use the Pylon
You need to have at least two working Pylons in your world to use a Pylon. Open the map and tap on the Pylon you want to travel to. If you meet the criteria, you can teleport to that location instead of the long walk.
Keep Them Active
If a Pylon goes out of commission, check the nearby NPCs. Ensure there are still the required NPCs in the area, and that the Pylon is in a suitable place. Organizing your settlements helps to prevent problems with your travel network.
Pick Useful Locations
You can put the Pylons anywhere you like. Think about the places you visit most often and keep them somewhere that saves you time. Having a Pylon near an important biome, settlement or resource gathering area can make future trips much easier.
Final Tips
Find NPC combinations that allow you to buy the Pylons you want, and then put them in useful locations around your world. Keep your Pylons active and your required NPCs nearby. Once you have a few Pylons working, it becomes a lot easier to travel around Terraria.
