Here's a quick guide on how to get the Hylian Shield in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The Hylian Shield is one of those items you'll be glad to have once you get your hands on it. It has 90 guard and 800 durability, so it can take quite a beating before it finally breaks. You don't need to finish Breath of the Wild to get it, either. You'll have to make your way into Hyrule Castle and deal with the monster guarding the chest, but that's about it.
Where to Look
The shield is inside the Lockup, which is the prison area of Hyrule Castle. If you've never been there before, finding the entrance might take a bit of time. Head toward the western side of the castle and look for a way into the prison corridors.
I'd bring a bow, some arrows, and a few healing items before heading in. There are plenty of enemies around the castle, and you don't want to reach the final fight with half your health gone. You can sneak past some enemies along the way, so there's no need to fight everyone you come across.

The Fight You Need to Win
The Stalnox in the Lockup is guarding the Hylian Shield. You'll have to beat it before the chest appears, so be ready for a fight when you reach the room.
Using your bow is a good way to deal with it. Aim for its eye, and when it falls over, run in and hit it with your weapon. Don't hang around once it gets back up, though. Its arm swings can catch you if you're standing too close, so back off and wait for another chance to attack.
Keep doing this until the Stalnox is down for good. It might take a little while, but there's no reason to rush in and lose health when you can wait for a decent opening.
Taking the Hylian Shield Home
Once the Stalnox is defeated, open the chest and grab the shield. That's all you need to do. You can leave the Lockup and get back to exploring Hyrule without having to complete another quest first.

The shield can still break, despite its high durability. If you lose it, you won't have to fight the Stalnox again to get another one. Complete the From the Ground Up side quest in Tarrey Town, then visit Granté to buy a replacement for 3,000 rupees. Just make sure you meet the requirements for his shop and don't already have the shield.
