Activision confirms Modern Warfare 4's release date, campaign setting, multiplayer updates, loyalty rewards, and Switch 2 support.
Activision has finally released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, ending months of anticipation about the latest iteration of the long-running game. The game was expected to be announced, and the publisher has now confirmed a few key details, including its release date, campaign setting, multiplayer details, and platforms.
Modern Warfare 4 will have a story-focused campaign centered on a conflict in the Korean Peninsula and will launch on October 23. Activision said that players will be part of a military tale across a range of locations and views as the fight threatens to destabilize the world.
It seems like the campaign will revolve around a squad of young South Korean soldiers during a North Korean attack, while Captain Price completes a different mission in the shadows. Missions will include trench fighting in Korea, close-quarters conflict in New York, high-speed chases through Paris and SAS operations in Mumbai.
Activision is also launching a new version of DMZ with the campaign, billed as a dynamic world in which each deployment offers a unique experience. Player decisions and changing events will more drive each session, the publisher said. One of the most notable gameplay changes is the multiplayer movement.
The movement and combat are realistic, as Infinity Ward wanted.
Infinity Ward has confirmed that the omni-movement system shown in recent entries will not be appearing in Modern Warfare 4. Instead, the developer is taking a more realistic approach to battle and movement dynamics. There will still be tools that players can use, such as tactical sprinting, sliding into ADS, and advanced traversal.

Effects on stamina can now be seen. Mantling has been improved. Weapons can now interact with the environment – Ledge hanging – A more natural way to move into prone positions. The improvements are meant to make mobility feel more organic, while keeping the fast-paced action that Call of Duty is known for.
Infinity Ward expects the enhanced technology will offer more control without losing responsiveness. Activision is also offering a loyalty discount for returning players. The 10% discount is available to everyone who has bought a Call of Duty game since Modern Warfare (2019) or played Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition through Xbox Game Pass.
There are loyalty discounts for long-term Call of Duty gamers. This offer is for gamers who have owned titles, redeemed games via subscription services, or participated in recent entries on compatible platforms. The move seems to be both a reward for long-term engagement and an incentive to encourage early adoption of the new release.
Nintendo Switch 2 Will Feature Full Crossplay Experience at Launch.
Another noteworthy announcement is the game's availability on the Nintendo Switch 2. In addition to Xbox, PlayStation and PC, Modern Warfare 4 will also be coming to Nintendo’s new system. This will be the first Call of Duty game in a long time to come to a Nintendo platform. Unlike previous Nintendo versions of Call of Duty, the Switch 2 edition will not be released individually.
Activision has confirmed full crossplay support, so Switch 2 players won’t be left behind with the same content and multiplayer ecosystem as gamers on other platforms. Thanks to crossplay and the existing upscaling technology, the game is set to be one of the biggest third-party releases on Nintendo’s new platform.
October 23 sees the launch of Modern Warfare 4, and all eyes are on Microsoft's broader first-party portfolio. Industry sources say the release date could affect launch schedules of major Xbox titles such as "Halo," "Gears of War," and "Fable" as Microsoft aims to avoid a head-to-head battle with one of the most anticipated annual releases in gaming.
