Capcom says the Nintendo Switch 2 version is outperforming expectations, with improved optimization, stable frame rates, and a massive DLC expansion arriving alongside the game's launch.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 continues to impress ahead of its console release, giving Nintendo Switch 2 users another exciting third-party title to look forward to. While game performance on Nintendo’s hybrid hardware frequently relies on developer optimization and the engine that powers a title, early remarks from Capcom suggest the planned port is coming together far better than many expected.
The action RPG was revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct and confirmed for release on October 9 for Nintendo Switch 2, alongside the brand-new Dark Arisen DLC expansion. The expansion will also launch concurrently on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, so fans across all platforms can enjoy the additional content from day one.
The production team has been pleasantly surprised by how effectively the game runs on Nintendo’s new hardware, according to comments from Dragon’s Dogma 2 producer Naoto Oyama.
“Performance on Switch 2 is currently exceeding internal expectations,” he said, noting the game often runs above the 30 FPS objective during gaming. Those enhancements are the product of months of optimization effort that wasn't only focused on the Switch 2 version. Capcom has also been working to improve performance on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions ahead of the next Dark Arisen update, so many of those technical improvements can be applied to the Nintendo port as well.
The developer said the team has spent a lot of time on many small performance changes that add up to a significant overall increase in frame rates. The same enhancements should also boost console performance even further with an upcoming title update slated for late August. Capcom says it aims to get the performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S closer to 60 FPS, and that the optimization efforts have been directly translated to the Nintendo Switch 2.
As such, the Switch 2 version is said to run at a minimum of 30 FPS, with much higher frame rates in several gaming situations. There is still more work to do before launch, Oyama said, but he is confident players will be pleased with the final product. According to current testing, the dev team believes they’ve developed a robust version of the game for Nintendo's newest machine.

The RE Engine, developed by Capcom, is a key contributor to strong performance and has proven incredibly flexible across several platforms. Though the Switch 2 isn't as powerful as the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on paper, the engine has always been capable of stunning outcomes. Capcom has previously released several RE Engine titles on the Switch 2, such as Street Fighter 6, Pragmata, and Resident Evil Requiem. "Every launch has given the company invaluable experience and technical know-how that can be shared across development teams,” Oyama says.
With the RE Engine created in-house, Capcom has built years of optimization expertise that makes subsequent ports more efficient.
That expanding knowledge base seems to be paying off again here with Dragon’s Dogma 2. These recent statements strengthen the notion that the RE Engine is now one of the most powerful technical foundations for building Nintendo Switch 2 games. But large open-world games typically struggle on less powerful hardware, yet a mix of rigorous optimization and Capcom’s engine seems to be performing impressively well.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is a very ambitious game for the platform. It’s a big open-world action RPG with huge locations and lively encounters; it’s not without its technical hurdles. But early indications show the game is running incredibly well instead. And that only adds to Capcom’s reputation for excellent quality Switch 2 ports. The publisher has often shown that visually demanding games can perform remarkably well on Nintendo's latest hardware, as long as they are well optimized and built on an engine that scales effectively.
The game’s arrival is also well-timed for players who may have missed out on its first release. When the Switch 2 version launches, the base game will include several performance upgrades and other adjustments made as part of its post-launch support. In addition to the technological enhancements, there are many new materials for players to enjoy. Capcom has announced that the Dark Arisen expansion will provide over 25 hours of additional gameplay, one of the series’ largest content additions. The Switch 2 version looks like a fantastic starting point for new players, with an optimized base game, quality-of-life enhancements, and an expanded adventure, giving returning players plenty of incentive to rejoin the world.
