PlayStation’s rumored 2.5D Metroidvania entry in the God of War universe skips Summer Game Fest and State of Play—but might appear in September.
Recently, a rumor has circulated through the gaming community claiming that a new God of War spin-off is in development. What started as small talk quickly gained traction as everyone began discussing it. Another thing an insider shared was that the new God of War project might not be AAA but rather a small-scale, side-scrolling Metroidvania title that takes Kratos in a new direction.
An insider says that the long-rumored God of War spin-off will not come out until 2026. When discussing recent events in the gaming world, an insider reported that the mysterious God of War project with a Greek theme has been pushed back, along with Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon.
The spin-off game: “The unannounced Greek God of War project… I heard was pushed into 2026 as well”, was remarked by the insider. This comes after PlayStation didn’t show much at Summer Game Fest—only Death Stranding 2 was there, even though fans were hoping for more first-party surprises.
The project, initially described as a 2.5D Metroidvania game, has undergone significant changes as fans have discussed it. People have referred to it as a prequel, a remake, and even a remastered trilogy at various times. Now, most people agree on one thing: there should be a full-fledged spin-off that is very different from the main series in terms of style and size.
Many people thought the game would be announced at the PlayStation State of Play in June or possibly released in late 2026, perhaps in November. Sony was ready for one more first-party hit in the fall since Ghost of Tsushima’s next-gen rerelease, Ghost of Yōtei, is coming out in October. That did not happen, though.

In its place, fans now speculate that the game might be showcased during a potential September State of Play. This would align with Sony’s typical marketing schedule and provide an opportunity for them to showcase not only the spin-off of God of War but also other projects that have been in development for a while, such as SAROS.
But for now, it looks like Kratos—or maybe a new main character in the same mythological world—will have to wait a little longer before coming back into the spotlight. It’s still too early to tell if this game will be a surprise hit or a bold new take on the franchise, but anticipation and doubt are building.
