Markiplier adapted the indie video game Iron Lung, and it quadrupled its budget on Friday.
Iron Lung has a movie adaptation now, done by longtime YouTuber Markiplier. I am looking forward to watching this movie and seeing how he does, as I have been a longtime fan of his. Iron Lung is also a pretty unique horror game, as many indie horror video games nowadays seem to be.
Markiplier seems to have done this movie for a very low budget compared to most movies playing in the theater right now. But with that budget, he ended up making more money than any other film did last Friday at the box office.
You can credit that to his massive following online, but also a movie being made outside of a major studio is always exciting for people.
Seeing someone decide they want to make a movie based on a game they really enjoy and do it basically out of pocket is pretty awesome to see as an indie filmmaker myself. It’s very inspiring to see a film come out in theaters and make as much money as it did and not be owned by a major studio. I think this really opens doors for indie filmmaking and also for theaters to start showing more independent films.

Iron Lung has gone on to make over $20 million in its opening weekend compared to its less than $3 million budget. For a movie playing in theaters, less than $3 million is pretty incredible. I hope the movie continues to be great.
With the success, it proves that people are dying for less studio slop. Also, seeing a movie being made off of an indie game like Iron Lung is a great start for more to follow in its steps as far as indie games to film go.
