Sony Has Two State of Play Events Coming, and September Could Get Wild

PlayStation is bringing first-party updates, Japanese games, and a big Final Fantasy VII Revelation showcase.

September is wasting no time getting interesting for PlayStation fans. Sony has officially announced not one, but two State of Play presentations, set to run back-to-back on Thursday, September 3. That means plenty of surprises could be packed into a single morning.

According to the sources, the first State of Play will begin at 9:00 A.M. ET, or 6:00 A.M. PT. The early start seems intentional, especially with Tokyo Game Show coming up on September 17. With Japan and other Asian markets playing such a big role in the second presentation, Sony appears to be using this event to spotlight games from across the region.

The first show will include updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and Sony's third-party partners. However, the biggest confirmed segment will come at the end, with Square Enix set to provide an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

That alone gives the showcase plenty of attention. The game has already generated plenty of interest. However, one major question still hangs over it: when is it actually coming out? Announcing a release date during State of Play is a fitting way to close the presentation.

Once the first event wraps up, State of Play Japan will begin almost immediately.

This second presentation will focus on upcoming games from developers in Japan and across Asia. Sony has promised deeper looks, new gameplay announcements, and other updates, so fans of Japanese games could have a lot to look forward to. Naturally, the speculation has already started. One of the strongest possibilities is Naughty Dog's Intergalactic.

The studio recently revealed that its motion-capture and filming work is complete, which could mean the game is getting closer to showing actual gameplay. So far, much of what has been shown has focused on cinematic footage, leaving plenty of questions about how the game will actually play.

Until Dawn 2 could also make an appearance, especially since fans are still waiting for a release date. Then there is Fairgames, which remains something of a mystery. After being announced some time ago, the game has spent a long time away from the spotlight.

Will Sony finally show what's happening with it, or will fans be left scratching their heads again? There could also be some interesting third-party reveals. A new Sonic Frontiers follow-up has been rumored, while a new Tales game wouldn't be completely surprising either.

Tales of Arise launched back in 2021, so fans have been waiting quite a while for the next major entry.

Of course, Sony's recent decision to move away from physical game production after January 2028 is another topic likely to spark plenty of discussion among PlayStation fans. The announcement has already caused a strong reaction, and the State of Play could easily become another place for that conversation to spill over.

With two showcases happening back-to-back, PlayStation has plenty of opportunities to make September memorable. Between Intergalactic, Until Dawn 2, Japanese games, third-party surprises, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation, there is no shortage of possibilities.
