Here's a quick guide on how to use Wingman commands in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
When you're in the middle of a dogfight, it's pretty easy to forget that you've got wingmen flying alongside you. In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, you can give your squad orders instead of trying to deal with every enemy yourself. It takes a little getting used to, but once you know which commands to use, you won't have to do all the work alone.
How to Give Wingman Commands
You can control your squad using the D-pad, with each direction doing something different. Press Up to make your wingmen attack your current target, Left to let them pick their own targets, Down to have them cover you, and Right to toggle their special weapon use.

You won't have access to the system right from the beginning, so keep playing until you take command of Joker Flight. Once the commands become available, you can switch between them during combat without interrupting your flight.
Which Commands Should You Use?
If there's one enemy that's giving you a hard time, press Up to get your wingmen to focus on it. You can use this when you're struggling to take down a tougher fighter or just want to get an annoying enemy out of the way before moving on.
Left comes in handy when enemies are spread out across the battlefield. Your wingmen can pick their own targets instead of following yours, which saves you from having to chase every fighter yourself. If someone's on your tail, press Down to switch to Cover and let your squad focus on the enemies giving you trouble.

Don't Waste Your Wingmen's Special Weapons
Pressing Right allows your wingmen to use their special weapons, but you can switch this off again whenever you want. I'd leave it on when you're dealing with a difficult group of enemies, especially if you're having trouble keeping up with everything happening around you.
If you'd rather save their special weapons for a later fight, turn the option off until you need the extra firepower. There's no need to keep changing commands throughout an entire mission, so use them when they actually help.
