Outbound: How to Get a Dog Companion

Here's how to get a dog companion in Outbound.

Adopting a dog in Outbound means heading to Paws and Whiskers Lodge, sitting at the entrance to the second portion of the map. The lodge is right where the coast area begins, and following the map's directional arrows gets you there without much guesswork.

Finding the Lodge

Approach the small lodge building and loot around inside first. Water and recyclable trash are usually scattered around the front rooms, worth grabbing before heading further in.

Through the back room, four dogs wait to be adopted in Outbound. Only one can be chosen, so it's worth looking over each before deciding.

Adopting a Dog

Press E on the dog to select it as a companion. A naming prompt follows, letting a custom name get set before confirming the adoption. This choice is permanent in Outbound, so picking carefully matters since switching later isn't an option.

Commanding the Dog

Once adopted, the dog can be given commands using the left control button. Pointing at it and selecting Stay keeps it in place instead of following along, while Follow Me brings it back to trailing behind.

The dog also comes equipped with pouches for carrying items, holding up to 10 slots. Pressing E while aiming at the dog deposits items directly into the pouch, similar to placing something into vehicle storage. Items can also be pulled back out the same way once needed again.

Bonus Perks

Petting the dog triggers a small interaction and also unlocks a Steam achievement tied specifically to that action. Beyond the achievement, the dog rides along in the vehicle and sticks close throughout exploration in Outbound, making it a useful companion on top of being a cute one.
