Here's a guide on how to unlock and craft Vehicle Upgrades in Outbound.
Upgrading the vehicle in Outbound is a multi-step process. It involves unlocking blueprints, building the right stations, and crafting the upgrades before they get applied. Nothing is automatic until the final step, so working through each stage in order is the way to go.
Unlocking the Vehicle Research Station
Head to the Community Tree on the map and fully explore it. This unlocks the blueprint for the Vehicle Research Station. Once the blueprint is in hand, build the station on top of a counter just like any other workstation.

Setting Up the Bolt Press
Most vehicle upgrades require Bolts to research and craft. Bolts are made using a Bolt Press, which is unlocked by downloading blueprints from the Signal Towers found across the map. Construct the Bolt Press on a counter, fill it with Scrap Metal, and it produces Bolts. Stock up before heading to the Vehicle Research Station since upgrades can cost a fair amount.
Researching an Upgrade
Approach the Vehicle Research Station and browse the available upgrades. There are quite a few to choose from. Select the desired upgrade - for example, Motor Upgrade 1 - and spend the required Bolts to research it. Researching only unlocks the blueprint. The upgrade is still to be made separately.

Creating and Installing the Upgrade
Go to the Workbench and find the vehicle upgrades tab. The researched upgrade will be there with its crafting requirements. Collect the required Scrap Metal and Bolts, and craft them in the crafting mini-game. In Outbound, this upgrade will be automatically applied to your vehicle, so you have nothing else to do.
