Outbound: How to Upgrade Tools

Here's how to upgrade tools like the Axe, Pickaxe, and Sickle in Outbound.

Upgrading a tool in Outbound works almost identically to unlocking one for the first time. A Signal Tower needs to be found with the next tier of the tool available for download, whether that's Axe II, Pickaxe II, or another upgrade.

The process reuses the same voucher and terminal system already familiar from getting the base tools, just applied to a higher tier blueprint. Nothing about the download step changes, only the tool being unlocked and what it eventually costs to craft.

Downloading the Blueprint

At the tower, a Download Voucher is required to claim the blueprint. Keeping a spare voucher on hand before heading out saves a trip back to the vehicle in Outbound.

Once spent, the blueprint downloads immediately, though the tool itself still needs to be crafted afterward.

Crafting the Upgraded Tool

Higher-tier tools usually need better materials than what the base version took. Axe II, for example, requires Everwood Planks instead of the regular wood used for Axe I. A Sawmill handles turning raw wood into planks, so having one built ahead of time speeds up the process considerably.

With the materials gathered, crafting the upgraded tool at the workbench uses the same crafting minigame as any other item in Outbound. Once finished, the new tool replaces the old one in the toolkit.

What the Upgrade Unlocks

A tier two tool opens up resources that the base version can't touch. Axe II allows cutting down tougher wood types like birch, which simply won't respond to a level one axe. The same logic applies across the other tool types - each upgrade tier gates access to a specific class of resource that becomes essential for progressing further into Outbound.
