Here's a quick guide on how to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The Master Sword is one of the best weapons you can get in Breath of the Wild, but you can't just pick it up whenever you reach the Korok Forest. You'll need 13 permanent hearts before Link is strong enough to pull it from the pedestal.
Getting there can also be a bit annoying if it's your first time going through the Lost Woods. Once you make it through, though, the sword itself is pretty easy to find.
Find the Lost Woods
Getting through the Lost Woods is the first real challenge. The woods are north of Hyrule Castle, and you'll need to follow the flames while paying attention to which way the wind is blowing. If the fog sends you back to the entrance, just try again and use the flames more carefully.
Reach the Korok Forest
Once you're through the Lost Woods, you're almost there. The Master Sword is sitting in the Korok Forest in front of the Great Deku Tree, so you won't have to search around once you arrive.

Get 13 Hearts
You'll need 13 permanent hearts to pull the sword out. Yellow bonus hearts don't count, so you'll need to increase your actual maximum health by completing Shrines and trading four Spirit Orbs at a Goddess Statue.
If you've spent most of your upgrades on stamina, there's still a way to fix that. The Horned Statue in Hateno Village lets you trade between hearts and stamina, so you can temporarily move some of your stamina upgrades into health.
Pull Out the Master Sword
Once you have 13 hearts, walk up to the sword and pull it out. Link will struggle with it for a moment before finally getting it free, and then the Master Sword will be added to your inventory.
The Master Sword doesn't permanently break like regular weapons. After using it for a while, it runs out of energy and becomes unavailable for a short time, but it will recharge on its own.
Upgrade the Master Sword
The Master Sword can be powered up if you own The Master Trials DLC. The Trial of the Sword puts you through several combat challenges, and completing all of them permanently increases the sword's power to 60.

Get your hearts up, make it through the Lost Woods, and the Master Sword is waiting for you in the Korok Forest.
FAQ
Q. Can I get the Master Sword before completing the Divine Beasts?
A. Yep. You don't have to finish any of the Divine Beasts first, so you can go for the sword whenever you have enough hearts.
Q. Do yellow hearts count toward the 13-heart requirement?
A. No. You need 13 actual hearts, so food and other temporary bonus hearts won't help you pull out the sword.
Q. Can the Master Sword actually break?
A. It doesn't break permanently. It runs out of energy after enough use, then takes some time to recharge before you can use it again.
