Christy, the new biopic starring Sydney Sweeney, has had one of the worst opening weekends ever for a film of its budget.
Sydney Sweeney’s new film, Christy, has her playing a famous female boxer named Christy Martin. This film had a lot of hype, as it was one of Sydney Sweeney’s first films, in which she had to change her appearance drastically. It’s also a biopic film, and having her in the lead seemed like this could be a big career move.
The film itself has also been released during Oscar season, as have many biopics, which tend to be Oscar-bait. This film also came out around the same time as The Smashing Machine, where The Rock played a famous fighter as well.
That film had the same issue, where it didn’t generate nearly as much money as the studio had hoped. Both films showed two actors who wanted to branch out more into the drama world. But it seems that they couldn’t necessarily get their feet on the ground by playing famous fighters, box office-wise.
Christy brought in $1.3 million from 2000+ screens. The film also debuted at number 10 on the box office for the weekend. For a movie of this caliber, this is pretty horrible. Many speculate this might have something to do with Sydney Sweeney’s recent PR controversy with her American Eagle ad.

I believe, regardless, that many are tired of biopics, and we’d like to see more original films. I believe Sydney Sweeney is a talented actress, but I’d rather see her in a project with an original idea, playing a unique character.
Much like The Smashing Machine, I believe the film will do better once it hits streaming services, but that will not make up for all the money they need to recoup. It’s interesting to see that the movie came out at the same time as all this tension was going on with her.
Sweeney went on an interview to give an interesting answer regarding the backlash of the American Eagle ad, and it seems that that probably has a lot to do with people not wanting to see the movie. I believe the movie will probably be fine. I just don’t think that we need more biopics.
