Here's how to unlock the new abilities for the six base survivors in Risk of Rain 2.
Risk of Rain 2 received a free update with Hallowed Concepts that adds a new ability for Commando, Huntress, Engineer, Artificer, REX, and Acrid. Each one comes from a challenge. This guide covers all six, starting with the one that needs the most setup.
Commando: Earn 8 Karma in Risk of Rain 2
Commando's new special in Risk of Rain 2, Sabotage, comes from the Retribution challenge. Defeat the final boss, Mithrix, as Commando after you earn 8 Karma. Sabotage throws three explosives that stick to surfaces. They reportedly zap enemies for 400% damage.
Turn Karma on in the Karma panel on the right side of the character select screen before you start the run. Karma stacks up to 8 times, and completing the game after earning Karma unlocks that level as a starting option. Challenges still unlock while Karma is on.

Your first source is N'kuhana in the Bazaar Between Time. Hit her until she kicks you out to earn Karma. Visit her on every stage you can. Reports differ on how many kick-outs count, so keep going until your Karma stops rising.
Other actions earn 1 Karma each: defeating the Alloyed Worship Unit, completing a Halcyon Shrine, defeating Aurelionite, holding three lunar items, holding 50 or more items, and looping. The Halcyon Shrine is random, so it may not spawn.
Your total varies from run to run, so check the Karma count on screen as you play. If you fall short of 8 before the final boss, loop and visit N'kuhana again.
Karmic Mithrix can kill a build with many items, even one that clears runs with ease. Lower the difficulty and use the Artifact of Command to prepare.

Huntress: Get the Artifact From Bulwark's Ambry
Huntress’s new secondary, Laser Cyclone, comes from the Tomb Raider challenge. Obtain an artifact from Bulwark’s Ambry in 25 minutes or less. That means you rush every stage, ideally in under 5 minutes each, and lowering the difficulty helps.
Reach stage 5, which is Sky Meadow or Helminth Hatchery. Set an artifact code with the nine switches on the Compound Generator, then activate the laptop to open the portal. Each switch cycles through square, circle, triangle, and diamond.
For example, the Artifact of Command code is three squares in each of the top two rows and three triangles in the bottom row. You don't need to finish the teleporter first, which saves time. Helminth Hatchery belongs to Seekers of the Storm.

In the Ambry, kill enemies for Artifact Keys, and use them one at a time on the Artifact Reliquary. Destroy it, then grab the artifact.
Engineer: Fuel an Equipment Drone in Risk of Rain 2
In Risk of Rain 2, Engineer’s new primary, the Laser Cutter, comes from the Mad Scientist challenge. Repair an Equipment Drone with an Escape Pod’s Fuel Array. The Laser Cutter reportedly heals turrets and drones.
Take the Fuel Array from the back of your Escape Pod on the first stage. It takes your equipment slot, and it explodes and kills you if your health drops to 50% or below. Avoid hits until you find a drone.

Your turrets can trigger it too. They reportedly inherit the Fuel Array and explode when they drop to 50% health, so keep them away from you.
Look for a Broken Equipment Drone, which appears on several stages, including Scorched Acres. Interact with it to repair it, which costs 1 equipment, your Fuel Array, and the challenge completes.
Artificer: Reach Mithrix Without a Pillar
Artificer’s new utility, Tectonic Blast, comes from the One Giant Leap challenge. It reportedly puts oil on enemies.
Reach the final boss on the moon without activating a pillar. You don’t need to beat Mithrix. Use her Ion Surge special to float over the pillars, and you need almost no setup.

REX: Win With Five Different Lunar Items
REX’s new utility in Risk of Rain 2, Proliferation, comes from the Invasive Growth challenge. Beat the game with at least five different lunar items.
Proliferation reportedly shoots a flower you can teleport to. The flower shoots nearby enemies on its own.
Duplicates don’t count. For example, five Gesture of the Drowned is one item type, not five. You can buy lunar items in the Bazaar Between Time.
Acrid: Win After Sequencing Your Items in Risk of Rain 2
Acrid’s new special in Risk of Rain 2, Clawing Breath, comes from the Miracle challenge. Beat the game after you sequence your items at least once.
Clawing Breath reportedly leaves a lingering cloud of toxic breath that deals 240% damage per second. It pairs well with blight builds.
To sequence your items, use a Shrine of Order. It costs 1 Lunar Coin and turns all your items of each rarity into one randomly picked item of that rarity. For example, 30 white items could all become 30 crowbars.

Shrines of Order spawn only on Rallypoint Delta, where they’re rare, and on the moon, where one always appears.
Use the moon’s shrine after you beat Mithrix, on the way out, since sequencing before the fight can wreck your build. Beat Mithrix, use the shrine, then escape on the ship.
What to Do Next
Start with Artificer, REX, and Acrid, since they need little setup. Then do Engineer and Huntress. Leave Commando for last, because Karmic Mithrix punishes mistakes.
To unlock the new abilities in Risk of Rain 2, you finish each survivor's challenge: 8 Karma for Commando, a Bulwark's Ambry run under 25 minutes for Huntress, a Fuel Array for Engineer, no pillars for Artificer, five lunar items for REX, and a Shrine of Order for Acrid.
