Here's how sprinklers work and how to use them in Stardew Valley.
Sprinklers save a ton of time on watering in Stardew Valley, and once you know how each tier covers your crops, planning your farm layout gets a lot easier. Picking the wrong tier early on can mean wasted tiles or awkward gaps in your coverage, so it's worth understanding the differences before committing to a layout. Once everything's placed, though, watering becomes almost entirely hands-off.
The Three Sprinkler Types
There are three sprinkler tiers - Regular, Quality, and Iridium. Regular unlocks at Farming level 2, Quality at level 6, and Iridium at level 9. Costs go up as you move through the tiers. The Regular Sprinkler needs 1 Copper Bar and 1 Iron Bar. The Quality Sprinkler needs 1 Iron Bar, 1 Gold Bar, and 1 Refined Quartz. The Iridium Sprinkler is the priciest, requiring a Gold Bar, an Iridium Bar, and a Battery Pack.
How They Work
Once placed on tilled soil, sprinklers water their covered tiles automatically every morning - no need to connect them to a water source or do anything else once they're down.
Coverage Area
The Regular Sprinkler only waters the 4 tiles directly adjacent to it, skipping the corners entirely. It gets the job done, but it's the weakest option by a fair margin. The Quality Sprinkler covers all 8 adjacent tiles, including the corners the Regular Sprinkler misses, making it a much easier tier to build a layout around.
The Iridium Sprinkler covers by far the most ground, watering a full area extending two tiles out in every direction, corners included. It's the most expensive option to craft, but the coverage makes it worth grabbing as soon as you're able to in Stardew Valley.
Upgrades
Sprinklers can also be upgraded further with Pressure Nozzles, which extend their watering range, and Enrichers, which apply fertilizer automatically while watering. Both take a bit more effort to get, so they're worth chasing once you've got the basics sorted in Stardew Valley.
Which Sprinkler to Prioritize
If you can afford it, go straight for the Iridium Sprinkler, since its coverage far outclasses the other two tiers and saves the most time in the long run. Otherwise, the Quality Sprinkler is a solid mid-tier pick that fixes the biggest weakness of the Regular Sprinkler by covering corner tiles too.
Bumping up your sprinkler tier the moment your Farming level allows is one of the easiest time-savers in Stardew Valley.
