Here’s how to unlock Garden Pots and farm out of season in Stardew Valley.
Garden Pots in Stardew Valley let you plant seeds from any season, as long as the pot sits somewhere weather can't reach. You get the recipe from Evelyn after fixing the Greenhouse, and this guide also covers where pots work and what they won't hold. Details reflect version 1.6.
Repair the Greenhouse First in Stardew Valley
The Garden Pot recipe comes after the Greenhouse on your farm is fixed. Finish the Pantry bundles at the Community Center, or buy the Greenhouse project for 35,000g through the Joja Community Development Form.

Trigger Evelyn's Visit
Once the work is done, Evelyn brings you one Garden Pot and the recipe. Walk out of the Farmhouse between 6:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on a day with sun and no wind to start the cutscene.
The route you took changes the timing. On the Community Center path, the scene can't trigger for 3 days after the Pantry is done, and it may take longer. Joja players in Stardew Valley skip that wait, and Evelyn can show up right away.

Craft More Garden Pots in Stardew Valley
Each pot takes 1 Clay, 10 Stone and 1 Refined Quartz. The recipe then shows up in your crafting menu.
Where Garden Pots Work in Stardew Valley
Indoors means any place weather can't reach. Your Farmhouse, a Shed and other farm buildings all count, along with spots such as The Sewers and the entrance to The Mines.
Inside, seeds ignore the season, so a summer crop can grow in winter. Outdoors on your farm, pots only take crops from the season you're in.

Plant and Water Your Pots
Garden Pots in Stardew Valley need no tilling with the Hoe. Place the pot, then plant a seed straight into it. Fertilizer works the same way it does in tilled soil. Sprinklers can't reach pots, though, and each one needs a Watering Can. Retaining soil cuts down on watering. With Deluxe Retaining Soil, you water the crop once and never again.
What Garden Pots Won't Grow
Ancient Seeds won't go into a pot, indoors or out. The game turns them away with a line about the roots growing too deep. Plant them in the Greenhouse instead.

Giant crops can't form in pots either, the same as in the Greenhouse. Crows leave crops in pots alone, though. Harvest before you pick up a pot in Stardew Valley, because removing it destroys whatever grows inside.
What to Do Next
The TV forecast each evening tells you which morning Evelyn might come. Stock up on Clay and Refined Quartz for a row of pots. A Shed lined with pots gives you crops out of season. Once you have Deluxe Retaining Soil, add it to water less often.
Once Evelyn hands over the recipe, Garden Pots let you grow any season's crops in your Farmhouse, a Shed or anywhere else indoors.
FAQ
Q. How do I trigger Evelyn's Garden Pot event in Stardew Valley?
A. Leave the house between 6:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on a day with sun and no wind. On the Community Center route, it also can't happen until at least 3 days after the Pantry is done.

A. They won't water pots at all. Use a Watering Can, or add Deluxe Retaining Soil so you only water once.
Q. Do Garden Pots work outside in Stardew Valley?
A. On your farm, yes, but only for seeds from the season you're in.
Q. Where do I plant Ancient Seeds if pots won't take them?
