Here's how to color furniture and turn resources into decor in Moonlight Peaks.
Decorating in Moonlight Peaks goes beyond furniture. Many resources and catches can go on your floor as decor, and some recipes let you pick a color before you craft.
Open Decorate Mode in Moonlight Peaks
On keyboard, press X to enter decorate mode. Moonlight Peaks shows few prompts for this, so check the controls tab in the settings if you play on a controller or want to remap it.

Inside the mode, J switches to floor mode, and you can pick up a placed item and put it back in your inventory. Chester, your shipping bin, can be moved here too, without a spell or a carpenter.
Keep Furniture in Your Bag
Furniture has to be in your inventory before you can place it. Decorate mode doesn't pull from house storage, so move pieces into your bag first.
Crafting stations do pull from house storage, but not from crates. Keep any decor you want to protect in a crate so a station doesn't use it up as a material.

Choose Colors Before Crafting in Moonlight Peaks
Some recipes in Moonlight Peaks show a paint icon at the crafting bench. Select it to pick the item's color before you craft, since there's reportedly no way to recolor an item afterward. Check the materials for each color. Some versions need a different resource, such as another type of wood.
Place Resources as Decor in Moonlight Peaks
Resources change shape when you place them. Fiber goes into a basket, and Logs stack into a small pile. Most flowers go down as they are, but Lavender gets its own magical container. Bugs and fish come with little homes of their own. Before you sell a spare resource, place one to see what it turns into.

What to Do Next
Move the furniture you want from house storage into your bag, then open decorate mode in Moonlight Peaks. Pick colors at the bench for anything you still need to craft. Set aside a spare bug or fish for display, since each one comes with its own little home.
Carry furniture in your bag, pick colors before you craft, and place spare resources to see what decor they become.
